Bibliographia Humboldtiana: Instructions for inserting special characters
(especially in chemical, physical and mathematical formulas)
Find below the rules for inserting and transcribing special characters into the input dialogue
boxes for the Bibliographia Humboldtiana:
-
The following characters are not special characters and can be entered directly: brackets
(()[]{}), quotation marks (single and double), apostrophes, German umlauts (ä ö ü),
German and English punctuation characters (, ; . : - ! ?), simple mathematical connections
(+ - : / * = < >) as well as other special characters that can be found on the German and
English keyboard (% & ~ # @).
-
Super- and sub-scripted letters and numbers are typed onto the baseline in their normal
size. The order of the original must be maintained.
-
Characters that are stacked are typed onto the baseline in their normal size behind each
other. Characters that are typed on the baseline have priority over characters above them
and these have priority over characters below. If none of the characters are on the
baseline, higher numbers have priority over lower numbers.
-
Greek letters are spelled out as words using Latin letters. The conventions of the German
Duden prevail:
Α, α
Β, β
Γ, γ
∆, δ
Ε, ε
Ζ, ζ
Η, η
Θ, ϑ
Ι, ι
Κ, κ
Λ, λ
Μ, µ
Alpha

Φ, ϕ
Χ, χ
Ψ, ψ

The name of the Greek letter is to be written in lower case if the original Greek letter is lower
case (e.g. alpha for α), and in capitals, if the original is a capital letter (e.g. Pi for Π). The
letter is always capitalized at the beginning of a title.
-
Arrows can be depicted as following, depending on the original:
-> or <- or <-> or --> or <-- or --> or ==> or <== or <==>
-
Characters that cannot be depicted or described are replaced by a space.
