Rocks and Minerals - Fact Sheet
* Most rocks are covered by soil, trees, or grass.
* The oldest rocks on Earth are about 3,800 million years old!
* Rocks can be found everywhere. They surround us in towns, cities and the countryside.
* There are three main types of rocks at the Earth's surface - igneous, sedimentary and
metamorphic.
* All rocks are eventually worn away by rain, wind and other weather conditions.
* Igneous rocks come from volcanic eruptions. They are formed from magma that has cooled
beneath the Earth's surface.
* Sedimentary rock is formed from sediment like sand and clay. The layers of sediment are
squeezed so that they slowly change into hard rocks.
* Metamorphic rock is formed deep underground. Heat underground squeezes sedimentary and
igneous rocks to form new rocks called metamorphic rocks.
* The Taj Mahal in India is made entirely of marble, a type of metamorphic rock.
* Minerals are substances and are found in all rocks.
* The minerals mica, quartz and feldspar, for example, can be found in granite.
* Minerals often form crystals. They are usually transparent and have a smooth, shiny surface.
* Basalt is Earth's most common rock.
* Ayer's Rock in Australia is a massive lump of sandstone and measures 335 m high.
