An Age of Change
• Confucius lived at the end of the Zhou
dynasty.
• During this time of change many Chinese
philosophers were looking for ways to be
order to China.
• One of the most important of these
thinkers was Confucius.
Confucius the Teacher
• His ideas became known as
Confucianism.
• Confucianism is not a religion. It is a code
of behavior.
• Confucius taught about the Five
Relationships.

The Five Relationships continued
• Rulers and Their Subjects: Confucius said
that a ruler should act like a good parent to his
people.
• Ideas about government: Confucius said
that rulers should earn their powerful place in
the government.
• A Follower of Confucius: Almost 100 years
after Confucius died, his message was spread
by a follower named Mencius.
Opponents of Confucianism
• Moists: They believed in universal love for
all people.
• Legalists: They thought that people were
naturally bad, and that a strong
government kept evil under control.
• Daoists: They believed that people are
not good or bad. Rather, they thought that
people should live in harmony with nature.
