An ION is an atom that has become charged by gaining or losing one
or more electrons.
An atom is NEUTRAL when it has the same number of protons and
electrons.
An ion is CHARGED because it has a different number of protons
and electrons.
A negatively charged ion (more electrons than protons) is known as
an ANION
A positively-charged ion (fewer electrons than protons) is known as a
CATION
