He received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Computer Art from School of Visual Arts in 1991, where he learned to use the computer as a tool for expression. He received a Master of Science in Computer Science degree from University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1993, focusing on computer graphics and data visualization. During that time he worked in the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research, headed by Dr. Georges Grinstein. He was granted a three year fellowship from the NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program in support of this research, and was recognized in 1993 by the University of Massachusetts Lowell as the Outstanding Graduate Student in Computer Science. He co-chaired (along with Dr. Grinstein) the First IEEE Workshop on Database Issues for Data Visualization in 1993, and has been active in supporting the IEEE Visualization conference series. His research interests include data visualization, interactive techniques, databases and data mining. When he is not engaged in academic or professional pursuits, he is active in promoting the protection of wilderness areas within southern Utah.
