Earth’s systems
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/Wb_deichh_drei_kuhs.jpg
Interactions: look at the image and identify physical
features, living things, and explain their interactions.

Possible student responses:
Physical features
• Water
• Rocks
Living things
• Humans
• Grass
• Trees
Interactions.
Humans are boating in the water.
Trees are growing out of the rocks.
The water is pushing up against the rocks.
Trees are getting water from the river.
Humans are breathing the air.

Interactions
Atmosphere (A) • Humans (B) breathing air (A)
Geosphere (G)
• Water(H) is banging against the shore

Hydrosphere (H)

Biosphere (B)

• Trees (B) growing in the ground (G)
• Roots of the trees (B) getting water

Atmosphere
mixture of mostly invisible
gases that surrounds Earth
Exosphere
http://img.docstoccdn.com/thumb/orig/129468394.png
Geosphere
• Mostly solid, rocky part of Earth. It
extends from the center of Earth to
the surface of Earth.
COMPOSITIONAL LAYERS:
 CRUST: thin, outermost layer
 MANTLE: hot layer of rock between the crust and core
 CORE: in the center; made of iron (Fe) nickel (Ni)
PHYSICAL LAYERS:
 LITHOSPHERE: Outermost layer
 ASTHENOSPHERE: solid, plastic like layer upon which the
tectonic plates move
 MESOSPHERE: Solid layer of the mantle
 OUTER CORE: Liquid iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni)
 INNER CORE: Solid iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni)
Biosphere
• The biosphere is made up of living organisms
and the include the areas of Earth where life
can be found.

Hydrosphere
All of the water on Earth
 The hydrosphere is made up of water both
in and on the Earth.
 Examples: oceans, lakes, and rivers.

Cryosphere
All frozen water on Earth (Ex. Glaciers)
Review: Identify the Earth’s spheres represented in
the image and explain 2 interactions between
spheres.

Interactions
Atmosphere (A) • The jaguar (B) is interacting with: the
atmosphere (A) by breathing, the
Geosphere (G)
biosphere
(B)
by
standing
on
the
tree,
Bioshpere (B)
and the hydrosphere (H) by drinking
Hydrosphere (H) it.
• The trees (B) are interacting with: the
geosphere (G) by growing in Earth,
and the hydrosphere (H) by getting
water and the atmosphere (A) by
photosynthesis.
List three ways the spheres are interacting.

Hydrosphere (H) standing in it, and the biosphere (B)
by trying to control the Ox.
• The Ox (B) is interacting with the
hydrosphere (H) by drinking it and the
hydrosphere (H) and geosphere (G) by
standing on/in it, and the atmosphere
(A) by breathing it.
Interactions continued
• The trees and plants (B) are interacting with the
atmosphere (A) by photosynthesis, the hydrosphere (H)
by getting water, and the geosphere (G) by growing in it.
