A TEACHER’S GUIDE TO SUN SAFETY PROTECT YOUR STUDENTS 1 WHAT IS UV? 15-20 MINUTES Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of radiation that is produced by the sun. UV is invisible, and there are three distinct types: UVA, UVB and UVC rays. of unprotected sun exposure, without skin reddening or burning per day, should be sufficient for most people to produce the required Vitamin D levels. 1 UVA rays contribute to skin burning, skin cancer and premature ageing. They have a longer wavelength, which means they are able to penetrate deeper into the base layer of the skin. Sun light... ...boosts the immune system and stimulates our metabolism UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and also contribute to skin cancer. UVB rays have a much shorter wavelength and burns the outer layer of the skin. Lastly, UVC radiation is blocked by the ozone layer whilst UVA and UVB reaches the earth’s surface. Sunburn is a clear sign that the DNA in the skin cells has been damaged by too much UV radiation from the sun. You can’t feel UV rays – the heat from the sun comes from infrared rays, which can’t burn you. This is why people can still burn on cool days. Getting painful sunburn, just once every 2 years, can triple your risk of melanoma skin cancer.2 Source1 : Professor Andrew Wright, Consultant Dermatologist, Skin Cancer and Outdoor Workers; A guide for employers Source2 : http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer 2 Human skin contains... ...melanin which helps block damaging UV rays that penetrate our skin Remember…in larger doses UV LIGHT CAN DAMAGE OUR SKIN, producing burns, skin ageing, cell mutations and even skin cancer. THE RISKS Over- exposure to the sun during childhood can affect the risk of melanoma later in life.3 When parents, teachers and other role models use sun protection such as hats, shade, sunscreen and clothing, children are more likely to use these sun protection methods too. Therefore it’s vital to establish good sun protection habits early on in life. Sun exposure in the first 15 years of life contributes significantly to the lifetime 4 risk of skin cancer. Students are at school or college five out of seven days a week at times when 4 UV rays are high. Students spend an average of 1.5 hours outside per school day, more if involved 4 in sports and outdoor activities. SCHOOLS OBLIGATION Schools have a responsibility to ensure that pupils are protected from exposure to UV rays from the sun, and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for skin cancer prevention recommend that schools “develop, implement and monitor a specially tailored policy to ensure people are protected as much as possible.” Source3: Cancer Research UK, Source4: SKCIN MAKE SUN SAFETY PART OF YOUR CURRICULUM 3 BEST PRACTICE THE SUN SAFE RULES: When outside during break and lunch times... ... follow the 5S approach, for optimum protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. DON’T FORGET DRINK water regularly 4 BEST PRACTICE WHEN IS PROTECTION REQUIRED: Adopted by the World Health Organisation, the UV Index tells you on a daily basis what the UV levels are and when sun protection measures are required. 1-2 3-5 6-7 8-10 11+ LOW MEDIUM HIGH VERY HIGH EXTREMELY HIGH No protection required ED N REQUI R PR 3 O TECTIO Protection required Extra protection required Students need to be protected as soon as the UV INDEX REACHES 3, NOT JUST WHEN THE SUN IS SHINING. TO FIND OUT THE DAILY UV LEVEL VISIT: WWW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK BECOME SUN SAFE Schools and colleges can play a significant role in changing behaviours through education in two simple steps: 1. Develop and implement a policy to ensure people are protected as much as possible, follow the 5S approch and communicate this to students during lessons and activities and inform parents of how they can help support and reinforce the message at home. 2. Promote the UV index and explain how this can be used to identify when sun protection is required. 5 SPF50 RANGE UP TO 50x YOUR SKIN’S NATURAL PROTECTION BASED ON SKIN TYPE EACH STUDENT HAS AN AVERAGE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT... ...THEY CAN BE EXPOSED TO UV BEFORE IT'S DANGEROUS (usually around 15mins) RECOMMENDED & SAFEST OPTION •Higher level of protection •Re-apply every 2-3 hours for continuous protection •Compensates for improper use IF UNSURE OF CORRECT USAGE, USE HIGHEST FACTOR AVAILABLE!
