The ABE and ASE/HSE Math Videos List

Introduction
The videos cannot replace meaningful teacher/student
interaction, but they are a great supplement to
traditional teaching methods.1
This is a 21-page list of teaching/demonstration videos of numeracy and mathematics
procedures, functions or algorithms for the adult basic and adult secondary/high school
equivalency levels for adults and out-of-school youth in North America.2 Most of the
videos listed here were designed for adult instruction. Those that were made for children,
such as LearnZillion, were recommended by an adult numeracy teacher. The topics begin
with numeracy, and they progress up through trigonometry and calculus. The videos are
free, and will be found on the following web sites: eHOW Basic Math Skills; Khan
Academy; Learnzillion; Math Tips with Jim; Math TV; MathVillage3; Susan Jones’ Math
Videos, Parkland College Library; Test Dates Central; The Free math Tutor; and TV411.
The videos are organized by the following topics:
1. Arithmetic/Basic Operations and Number Sense
2. Number Conversions
3. Unit Conversions
4. Fractions and Mixed Numbers
5. Decimals
6. Per cents
7. Ratios and Proportions
8. Graphs and Charts
9. Contextualized Math
10. Word Problems/Problems in context
11. Scaling
12. Algebra
13. Geometry
14. Trigonometry
15. Statistics and Probability, and
16. Calculus.

County Literacy Council LIU12, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania
2
Not all videos have been listed for all sites. For example, for Khan Academy and The
Free Math Tutor, there are many more math videos at higher levels of math on those sites
that are not listed here.
3
Some of these are also available at http://www.youtube.com/user/dhabecker/videos
1
The videos are in alphabetical order for each topic, not in order of importance, quality or
my preference.
How you could use the videos
1. Review and carefully select the ones that are best for your students. Since most focus
on math procedures, not math thinking, they don’t replace good face-to-face teaching.
They generally do not include context, application, and reasoning. Some of the videos are
better than others, although not all math teachers will agree on which are better or worse.
In some videos, instruction is incomplete; some include mistakes and confusing
inconsistencies. On the other hand, some videos may have interesting, unconventional,
and/or especially clear and well thought-out approaches.
One teacher who reviewed this list said she does not have Internet access in her
classroom, so she uses math videos to prepare herself for her lessons and suggests that
students who have Internet access at home use them for practice outside of the classroom.
This may be the case for many other math teachers. Another teacher said she uses math
videos for her online adult secondary level students when they struggle with a concept.
A few of these videos are technically well-made and appealing as videos. I especially like
the videos listed under Contextualized Math and Word Problems/Problems in context.
I would be interested to know which videos you (plan to) use and how you use them.
2. Use the videos with your colleagues for professional development. Some adult
education math teachers have said they appreciate having these videos to improve their
own math knowledge or because they like the math strategies the teacher in the video
uses. Most adult education teachers, including teachers of math and numeracy, don’t get
to see what their colleagues do in their classrooms, how they approach teaching particular
content topics, what teaching approaches they use.
The Media Library of Teaching Skills, http://mlots.org is designed to provide a “window
on other adult education teachers classrooms,” a way to see what other adult education
teachers do. These short videos are best used face-to-face or online with a group of
teachers who, for example, teach the same subject as the one being taught in the selected
video, or who have taught or plan to teach that subject. The videos are not designed as
“best-practices” for emulation, but as examples of authentic classroom teaching, most of
which is in the good-to-very good range, and some of which could be emulated. This
means that viewing and discussing a video may reinforce the good practices teachers
already use, introduce new practices to try, perhaps better practices than teachers are
currently using to teach the same topic.
The math videos in this list could be used in the same way, not necessarily as “best
practices” to emulate, but as examples for discussion and critique. Some may be good
2
practices and some may not: some may get teachers thinking about better practices, and
perhaps about making their own videos to demonstrate those. Maybe this will spur you
on to make videos of your own teaching for your own students and to share with other
teachers.
3. Critique these videos to advocate for improvement in math teaching videos. Dialogues
have been taking place in many venues about the Khan Academy videos. For example,
this Ed Tech Research Blog article4, with an accompanying video critiquing a Khan
Academy video: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/edtechresearcher/2012/06/ or
http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/edtechresearcher/2012/06/the_mtt2k_prize_and_kudos_f
or_khan.html You can also see the video at
http://mathhombre.blogspot.com/2012/06/mystery-teacher-theatre-2000.html and read the
comments about it that have some good ideas about how to use videos with your students.
This critique may have caused Salman Khan to re-make a video or two to address some
of the problems identified.
To my knowledge, there is no comprehensive collection of videos for students yet that
deals effectively with how to teach math reasoning. Perhaps sharing your reviews of
some of these videos with your colleagues in online discussions can create the impetus
and resources to bring that about.
Undoubtedly there are other ways to use these videos. Please share your ideas with me. I
plan to periodically update this list – and this introduction – and may include them.5
