CYGNUS 1110
Modbus Router and TCP/UDP/IP based Terminal Server with
Built-in Network ports, RS232 ports and Ethernet ports
monitoringervers\\\\\\\ontrol and Monitoring Applications
FEATURES
Single-box Modbus Router solution for allowing a number of user
devices to communicate over an IP-based network in wide-area
Access, Control and Monitoring applications that have
RS232/RS485 and Ethernet based hosts and clients.
A built-in IP routing function allows the CYGNUS 1110 units to either
connect to an existing IP-based network, or be interconnected
among themselves to form a new IP-based network. Two Network
Ports with V.35 interface are provided. These can operate over
leased lines at speeds up to 2 Mbps.
Salient Features of Ethernet ports:
Built-in 4-port managed switch for 10/100 Base-T devices
Can connect to PCs, or TCP/IP clients or servers
MAC address based port security to minimise chances of misuse
Salient features of RS232 ports:
Four RS232 compatible Terminal Ports (higher port models available), These ports can also be used by 2 wire RS485 devices
using external Cygnus Converters.
Provides different modes for handling RS232 port data.
Modbus TCP/IP and Serial RTU/ASCII based packetization for
handling terminal port data: This is suitable for control and
monitoring of multiple Modbus Serial slave devices connected
to one or more RS232 ports. It also supports conversion from
one form of Modbus like Modbus TCP to Modbus Serial and
vice-versa.
UDP based packetization for handling raw RS232 port data,
with versatile data forwarding methods to replace party line
master-slave network formed out of multidrop analog modems.
TCP based packetization for handling RS232 port data for an
error-free, in-sequence delivery of data between two RS232
ports, or between an RS232 port and a remote TCP/IP host.
The unit can also be used as a standalone Terminal Server with
TCP/UDP-over-IP based data forwarding between RS232 user
devices and an Ethernet host
Menu-based supervisor, with commands for configuration, diagnostics, statistics and status reports are provided.
1500 VAC isolation option on RS232 ports
A separate RS232 compatible console port is provided for supervisory configuration and monitoring. In addition, the unit can also be
configured and monitored from a central NMS using Telnet.
Support is provided to generate SNMP “Traps” on user-selectable
events
Field upgradable firmware
External converters available from CYGNUS for RS232 to 2-wire
RS485, 4-wire RS422 or 20mA current loop interface.

The CYGNUS 1110 Modbus Router is ideal for commissioning an
independent IP-based wide area network, or for extending an existing
IP-based network to carry out Access, Control and Monitoring of slave
devices and hosts.
provides a configurable list of Modbus slave IP address and port
number. Modbus Router will enhance system maintenance capabilities.
It has port specific diagnostics that display status, message response
timing, timeout and error counts and message statistics.
For connection to the IP network through leased lines, the CYGNUS
1110 has two V.35 compatible WAN ports. These ports can be
connected to WAN ports of existing routers in the user’s IP network
using leased lines and external modems or can form a network amongst
themselves. Configurations such as redundant ring can be formed out
of cascading units interconnected through their V.35 ports.
.
The CYGNUS 1110 can also be connected to an existing TCP/IP
network using 10/100 Base-T Ethernet ports through which it can
connect to devices such as PCs, Ethernet based RTUs, Modbus/TCP
Servers and Masters etc.
A Modbus Serial Master connected to one terminal port of the CYGNUS
1110 is defined to send data to other Modbus TCP Slaves or Modbus
Router devices connected in an IP based network. By this the Modbus
Serial Master can poll its slave devices which are distributed across the
IP network. On the other hand multiple Modbus Serial Slaves
connected to terminal ports using an RS232 interface or RS485
interface through external RS232 to RS485 adapter (available from
CYGNUS) are mapped to a well know socket of the CYGNUS 1110 to
which remote Modbus Master (Serial or TCP) can send its data. The
responses from the Modbus Serial slaves are collected and sent to the
remote Modbus Master using Modbus (TCP) response packets.
Asynchronous RS232 ports of the CYGNUS 1110 can be used by a
variety of serial user devices such as RTUs, Dataloggers, start-stop
character based dumb terminals and PC’s COM ports. The functionality
offered by the unit to RS232 devices is what makes it versatile. It
provides Modbus TCP, UDP or raw TCP modes for encapsulating
RS232 port traffic for sending to or receiving from a destination host
over the IP network. The host system (master) itself can be configured
for connection to a RS232 port of a CYGNUS 1110 unit in the network.
If UDP mode of RS232 port traffic handling is selected, a network of
CYGNUS 1110 can transparently replace a one-master multiple-slave
mutidrop party line network of devices which uses analog modems. A
UDP packets formed out of Host system’s poll on its RS232 port is sent
almost simultaneously to multiple slaves which are connected to RS232
ports of different CYGNUS 1110 units. The response, which is given
only by the addressed RTU/Datalogger is received by its connected
CYGNUS 1110 unit and forwarded to the Master’s RS232 port in a UDP
packet, thereby completing the poll/response cycle.
The unit has ability to connect a remote Modbus Master to multiple
Modbus Slave devices that can connect to different RS232 ports of the
unit. It supports conversion from one form of Modbus, such as Modbus
TCP to Modbus RTU or Modbus ASCII. One Terminal port of CYGNUS
1110 can be configured to a Modbus Serial Master and remaining all
ports can be configured as Modbus Serial Slaves. The CYGNUS 1110
If guaranteed delivery of user data from devices such as RS232
transaction processing terminals, TCP mode should be used. This mode
provides error-free in-sequence character stream transfer between two
RS232 ports of this units in the network, or between a RS232 port and a
remote host with Ethernet interface.
