Essential Question (EQ) = What did the ancient Egyptians eat?
FLATBREAD
1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour, plus extra for kneading
1/2 to 3/4 cups water
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Extra-virgin olive oil
Combine the flour, water and salt in a large mixing bowl. Mix together with a
wooden spoon, then knead the dough with your hands in the bowl about 3
minutes or until the mixture forms a heavy, slightly sticky ball. Add more
water if needed, but be careful not to overdo it; the dough should be dense
and slightly tacky.
Turn the dough out on a lightly floured surface. Knead another minute. The
dough should be mostly dry to the touch. If not, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of
flour on the work surface and knead the dough an additional 30 seconds.
Shape the dough into a log about 6 inches long. Cut into 6 pieces. Flatten
each piece with a rolling pin into an 8-inch round or until about 1/4-inch
thick. Use additional flour on the work surface to prevent sticking.
Lightly coat a large skillet or griddle with oil and heat over a medium flame.
Place a dough round in the skillet and cook until it begins to puff and is
golden on the bottom, 1 to 2 minutes. Flip and cook the bread on the other
side 1 minute. Repeat with remaining rounds.

Essential Question (EQ) = How, and who, built the Pyramids of Egypt?
Area of Interaction (AOI) = Human Ingenuity
Into the Great Pyramid
Movie Notes
 West was an important direction for Egyptians- lived on the East and buried
dead on West side of Nile River
 Khufu would live forever if he was not forgotten he thought, so he build the
largest pyramid in history
 Dr. Hawass recently found the tombs of the builders of the great Pyramids.
They also found beer containers, bread making pots, and tools from the
original builders of the pyramids
 An ancient bakery was found and discovered thousands of baking pottery
containers – where there is bread, there are people. 100’s of
bakeries=1000’s of workers. They needed to feed the builders of the
pyramids
 The robot is trying to find new discoveries in the tomb inside the pyramid
 Step Pyramids were built before the invention of the wheel and pulleys, so
their building was a major accomplishment for people so old in history
 Around 2600 BC, there was a tidal wave of architectural design and
production of pyramids
 Khufus dad, Sneferu , perfected building chambers inside the pyramids
without collapsing down onto it called corbeling
 The bent pyramid was the first pyramid with the corbelling technology built
in so it would not collapse in on itself.

The Red Pyramid was the first of its kind – Khufu marked the foundation of new Pyramid with
huge ceremony- 7th wonder of the world.
As the builders built the Pyramid, the workers were leaving shafts and tunnels where the burial
chamber would be located.
30 feet high by 100 feet long for the Great Chamber
The final workers would bury the Pharaoh and then seal it with a huge stone to block robbers
The burial chamber is now sealed up
Khufus chamber and the riches in it has never been found
The Queens Chamber was not for Khufus queen, she had her own Pyramid
Maybe it was for Khufu’s spirit or soul?
The robot is filled with electronics to detect images, etc.
The blocking stone is at the end of a 180 foot shaft
It was cemented into the space to secure the tomb and whatever was behind it
They are drilling a hole through the end stone to see what is inside
Dr. Hawass is telling about the hieroglyphics pictures on the outside of the tomb
When they were buried, they were given tools and other things need for the afterlife
Statues, beer, and tools were included- His bones will tell us a lot about how they lived
The bones tell us that the Pyramids were not built by slaves as we previously thought- They
were well taken care of- Insurance, food, kids, families all helped
The bodies were worked over, and surgery was available for the workers
Amputation was the solution for a crushed arm
They would not do this for a slave, and must have valued the workers enough to not kill them
when injured
The workers all lived near the Pyramids and left behind lots of evidence of what they did
everyday
Fish, cow bones, and other artifacts were found in the workers village
The workers were fed well with meat, bread, beer, and fish
They found a huge foundation of a room where people ate together maybe?
The Pharaoh was a man-god who people worked very hard for

3rd Day of movie notes
Skilled craftsmen to build the Pyramids surrounded the area
They lived, ate, and worked together as a gang to compete
Dr. Hawass opens the tomb to find a skeleton inside
It is a man inside and on his side
This person was placed inside the tomb 1000 years before King Tut
He was facing East in the tomb
The pyramid builders were not slaves and the people that buried their fellow citizens were not
savages
Where is the palace of Khufu?
On the southern end of the Pyramid site, they found huge foundation walls that might be
guarding secrets of the palace
A royal building, and the artifacts of that palace, are being found at this new site
Silos are being found that once stored grain
Food was scarce and grain was king.
No bread=No pyramids
If you had grain, food, water, you had success in building the Pyramids
Dr. Hawass is on the outside of the pyramid looking for the shafts of the tunnel where the robot
is searching for clues
Shafts are really hard to build into the Pyramid and we don’t know why they took the trouble to
build them
Magic was essential to the Egyptians and was used in all ceremonies
Inside the secret tunnel is another sealed door behind the one they drilled through
It is something important behind the block in the Queens Chamber because it is protected well
