Teaching Notes
Introduce Milk as a drink
Ask students;
 Why is milk a good drink to have?
 Which foods are a good source milk/dairy products ?
 How many serves should we have each day?
What about milk?
Ask class where milks fit in Australian Guide to Healthy Eating (AGTHE) and
discuss how it is an everyday food.
Q. How many serves of dairy should Stage 2 students be aiming for each day?
A. Girls 9-11years need 3 serves per day (1 cup milk = 1 serve)
Boys 9-11 years need 2 ½ serves per day.
Outline the important nutrition milk provides. – Protein, Minerals (Calcium,
Phosphorus), Vitamins (A, B12, Riboflavin).
Note: Casein (protein in milk), phosphorus and calcium in milk can help protect
teeth and reduce the risk of tooth decay.
Reduced fat milk (& dairy products) are the best choice for children over 2
years of age. Reduced fat products contain the same nutrients without the
added fat which whole milk provides.
How Much Sugar is in milk?
Plain and flavoured milks provide the same important nutrients, but flavoured
milks have some added sugar. Also, the tooth friendly nutrients in milk can
help to protect teeth from the extra sugar.

Lesson 4 – What about Milk & Juice?
WHAT ABOUT FRUIT JUICE?
Ask class where juices fit into AGTHE.
Highlight the fruit section of the guide – can you see fruit juice here? No.
So where does fruit juice fit?
Max ½ cup of 100% fruit juice occasionally contributes to your daily fruit
serves. More than 1 cup is then counted as a sometimes food because of the
sugar content.
Q. How many serves of fruit are recommended for stage 2 students?
A. 2 serves per day for 9-11year olds.
Discuss the nutrition that fruit juice provides.
Freshly squeezed juice has all the Vitamins (Vitamin C) and Minerals (folate)
and some anti oxidants of fresh fruit, but not the fibre and structure of the fruit,
and so it is easy to over consume.
Fruit juice has about the same kilojoules and sugar content as other sugar
sweetened drinks (av 6 teaspoons sugar), from both the natural sugar in fruit
and added sugar.
Compare whole fruit to fruit juice.
Discuss how long it takes to eat whole fruit compared to drinking juice, and
how ‘full’ you feel after each.
A glass of orange juice can be drunk quickly (no flesh to chew, and no fibre)
and is therefore less filling than one whole orange, but provides more kilojoules
(energy).
Whole Orange
150 g (incl. skin)
3 g fibre
235 kJ
5 – 10 mins to eat
Orange Juice
250 ml
0 fibre
400 kJ
1 minute to drink
Using the timer device
Practical demonstration:
Time how long it takes to drink a glass of juice
Time how long it takes to eat a piece of fruit eg apple, orange
(Resources: 1 cup juice, 1 piece of fruit ie apple, orange)
How many oranges are needed to squeeze 1 cup (250ml) juice?
Ask students to guess how many oranges are needed to squeeze enough juice
for 1 cup juice.
Click on the pictures to reveal the right answer 3- 4 oranges – correct
Reinforce how easy it is to over consume your daily fruit serves by drinking
juice. It is better to eat your fruit than drink it.

Lesson 4 – What about Milk & Juice?
Optional practical demonstration:
Demonstrate how many oranges are needed to squeeze 1 cup (250ml) juice.
(Resources: orange squeezer, 4-5 oranges, preferably Valencia, 1 x 250ml
glass)
Conclusion
Main messages: (Pull out the tab to reveal the messages)
1. Water is best for thirst
2. Reduced fat milk is also a healthy choice
3. All sugar sweetened drinks provide about 6 teaspoons sugar in 1 cup,
and no other nutrition.
4. Eat whole fruit rather than drinking juice.
Remind students to complete Q4: H2O card each day
