Proposed logging of native forests “death sentence for Tasmania’s
endangered birds”
BirdLife Tasmania has described the proposed logging of Tasmania’s native
forests as a, “death sentence” for three of Tasmania’s Endangered bird
2species.
“Three of Tasmania’s most iconic species, Swift Parrot, Masked Owl and
Wedge-tailed Eagle are already listed as Endangered under Tasmanian and
Federal legislation. They are Endangered due to the loss of critical habitat for
nesting and feeding”, the Convener Dr Eric Woehler said today.
“Past Forestry operations in Tasmania have pushed these three species to
the brink of extinction” Dr Woehler added, “and the further loss of critical
habitats from the logging of Tasmania’s native forests proposed by the
Tasmanian Government, will push these species closer to extinction”.
“The last thing Endangered species need is the further loss of nesting and
feeding habitats”.
“There is no benefit to Tasmania if these species are lost forever” he added.
“Any logging of critical habitat for an endangered species, be it by Forestry
Tasmania or by private companies, can not achieve FSC Certification.
Without this, the product is tainted, and will be untouchable.”
“The proposal to log Tasmania’s native forests is toxic to Tasmania’s national
and international profiles, and poses serious risks to some of Tasmania’s
most vulnerable species.”
The proposal must be abandoned immediately Dr Woehler concluded.
