The Cell Membrane (A.K.A. The Plasma Membrane):Gateway to the
Cell
What is the function of the cell membrane?
1. Protect the cell
2. Support the cell
3. Decide what goes in and out
•
The _plasma_____ membrane is a _lipid bi-layer_____ membrane with
proteins and other molecules scattered throughout.
•
The Cell Membrane is also known as the _fluid mosaic__ model.
_Fluid______: because individual phospholipids and proteins can move around
freely within the layer, like it’s a liquid.
_Mosaic_____: because of the pattern produced by the scattered protein
molecules when the membrane is viewed from above.
•
_Phospholipids_ make up the cell membrane
– Head is __polar__ & tail is _non polar___
•
They arrange themselves so that the heads are exposed to the watery
environment and the tails face away from the water because the heads are
hydrophilic or “_water loving__” and the tails are hydrophobic or “_water
fearing____”.

The plasma membrane is said to be selectively permeable meaning:
The cell membrane only lets certain things in and out of the cell.
Give your own example of something selectively permeable, my
example is college because they can choose who gets in! What’s your
example?
Correctly color code the name for each part of the cell membrane.
