SESAME Training An overall landscape Steve Jones Canon Founda9on Background •  SESAME needs a cri9cal mass of skilled staff to build, operate and maintain the machine. The end user community skills also need development. These requirements are complex and diverse. •  The TrAC has developed widespread interna9onal contacts who are willing to help, but conver9ng these contacts into ac9ons is difficult. Resources on supply and demand sides have to be matched, and 9ming is cri9cal. •  This presenta9on looks at the overall training landscape for SESAME and suggests steps that may enhance the effec9veness of training efforts. The Challenges of Training For a successful SESAME project, training needs to: •  meet SESAME technical needs •  be of world-‐class standard •  aLract funding support •  be available and delivered when needed •  support both scien9fic and social development •  extend beyond the immediate training period This means that: •  SESAME development plans have to be synchronised with Supply Side opportuni9es, meet their condi9ons and those of funding agencies •  we have to recognise the social dimension of the training process. ALBA etc CoE Experts x,y,z Na9onal Experts The Supply Side -‐1 Many organisa9ons are willing to help SESAME, but: •  They have highly structured and formal programmes •  They have specific areas of exper9se that can be made available •  They can only accept trainees at specific points in their programmes •  They need to understand SESAME’s programme to build their confidence levels •  They need to convince their own staff that the work is worth the effort The Supply Side -‐2 This suggests that: •  A map of training opportuni9es and specialist exper9se in Centres of Excellence would help define opportuni9es for training. •  SESAME must provide clear forward plans of its needs (topics, schedules, staff & end user cvs, costs, measures of success etc) to help supply side planners •  Trainees must be able to fit in to supply side teams (skill levels, language, culture etc) •  Long training lead 9mes must be managed SESAME Training Needs Priority 1 (immediate): Build the team at Allan Priority 2 (immediate): Train the end user community through work at other facili9es Priority 3 (soon): Train end users for SESAME machine experiments and collabora9ve projects with other Centres of Excellence. Mentoring can build such capability: •  It transfers formal and tacit knowledge •  It meets scien9fic and social needs •  It provides long term support Mentors will come from: •  Supply side organisa9ons and their alumni •  SESAME partner countries Centres of Excellence Staff & facili9es EleLra Ongoing programmes Selec9on process Training to Support SESAME Machine Construc9on and Use Soleil Diamond Training to Support Na9onal Projects CERN ICTP Training to Support SESAME Collabora9ve Projects KEK ESRF Training to Support Collabora9ve Projects With Centres of Excellence ALBA etc CoE Experts Mentoring SESAME Partners Ir Is Tk PA Pk x,y,z Na9onalExperts Possible projects with a training component •  CERN partnering with SESAME to build the outer ring: •  shared design & execu9on, •  EU funding •  Needs a comprehensive plan •  Collabora9ve Molecular Biology project •  Egypt, Turkey, Israel & Diamond •  EU funding? •  Needs a comprehensive plan •  Pakistan Beam line construc9on project
