Electromagnetic radiation = Energy that can travel through space in the form of waves
Wavelength = Distance between crest of one wave and crest of the next wave (Shorter
wavelength means crests are closer together)
The electromagnetic spectrum includes the entire range of radio waves, infrared
radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Telescopes are instruments that collect and focus light and other forms of electromagnetic
radiation.
Optical telescopes are telescopes that use lenses or mirrors.
A refracting telescope uses convex lenses
Convex lens = Piece of transparent glass curved so that the middle is thicker than the
edges
Reflecting telescope uses a curved mirror to collect and focus light
The larger the mirror, the more light the telescope can collect for focus
Radio telescopes detect radio waves from objects in space
Normally have curved, reflecting surfaces
The hottest objects in space give off X-rays
