Section 3 – Electricity from Magnetism p.54
A.) Electric Current from a Changing Magnetic Field p.
54
1.) Electromagnetic induction – the process of
creating a current in a circuit by changing a
magnetic field.
2.) Electric current is created when:
a.) a magnetic field changes
b.) a magnet moves through a coil of a wire
c.) a wire moves between the poles of a magnet
B.) Faraday’s Experiment P. 54 See Figure 1
1.) Faraday hoped the magnetic field of the
electromagnet would make a current in the second
wire.
2.) No matter the strength of the electromagnet, a
current COULD NOT be produced in the second
wire.
a. The galvanometer pointer moved
C.) Success for an Instant P. 55
a. Galvanometer – a device used to measure
electric current in a wire. The pointer will move.
b. Electromagnetic induction – creating a current by
changing the magnetic field
c. When connected to a battery there was no
current
i. Connected/disconnected wires changed the
magnetic field (ONLY seconds of current
produced)
