WELCOME TO JOURNAL USE REPORTS™
Thomson Scientific is pleased to welcome you to your new Journal Use Reports subscription. You should
have already been notified that your account has been activated. In the notification e-mail you received is
a list of your institution’s contacts initially set up in the system. If you did not receive this notification, or
if any of the data was in error, please contact our Web Setups team at: [email protected].
Journal Use Reports is a new analytical resource created to help librarians and administrators understand
how journals are being used at their institution. JUR combines usage data for all journals in a collection,
along with citation data from Journal Citations Reports® (JCR®) and Web of Science®. This enables
librarians and administrators to conduct analyses within the context of their institutions. JUR combines
several types of data to insure fully-informed decision-making.
As a subscriber to ISI Web of Knowledge, you will find your Journal Use Reports links at
http://isiknowledge.com, once you register and sign in on the Portal Home page.
INTRODUCTION TO JOURNAL USE REPORTS
There are several distinct sections to Journal Use Reports, each of which provides different functionality
for the user. Because users are accessing Journal Use Reports from their registered ISI Web of Knowledge
account, users of each section within Journal Use Reports must be identified and authorized in Manage
My Accounts Contacts, which is located in the ISI Web of Knowledge Administrative Tools section.

Your institution may have designated several people to access the product’s different administrative
functions, or may have given one person all of them. The Administrative roles and functions are:
•
•
•
•
Manage My Accounts Contacts users can designate additional users and assign user roles.
Journal Use Reports Upload Utility users have the authority to upload library holdings and
COUNTER-compliant vendor usage data. Non-authorized users will not see this application in
their Administrative Tools list.
Journal Use Reports Publication Activity Profile Manager users have the authority to create
address profiles which can be searched by the Journal Use Reports system. More information on
this functionality is provided below.
Journal Use Reports users are those users authorized to access Journal Use Reports and view
and search the Journal List, Publication Activity, and Vendor Usage data.
Primary Contacts at Your Institution for Journal Use Reports
For each of the four user types named above, a primary contact from your institution must be designated
and set up in our authentication system. The primary contact person(s) may be the same for each
administrative function, or they may be different people.
You should have already received an e-mail notification from the Thomson Scientific Web Setups team
with the names of the Primary Contacts for these roles. If you did not receive this notification, if any of
the data was in error, or if you wish to authorize additional personnel to use Journal Use Reports,
please contact our Web Setups team at: [email protected].

GETTING STARTED WITH JOURNAL USE REPORTS
Journal Use Reports is comprised of several data sets including data from Journal Citation Reports®
(JCR®) and Web of Science®, as well as your library holdings and Vendor Usage data, which you will
upload into the product. The major components of Journal Use Reports are:
• Journal performance data from Journal Citation Reports (JCR)
• Institutional publication and citation activity from Web of Science, with customized views
specific to your institution. Article-level data from Web of Science will be linked for customers
subscribing to both products.
• COUNTER-compliant usage data.
In order to get maximum functionality from Journal Use Reports, you must:
• Upload your library holdings file(s)
• Upload vendor usage reports
• Create Publication Activity Profile(s)

JOURNAL USE REPORTS UPLOAD UTILITY (DATA IMPORT)
Importing your holdings and vendor usage data to Journal Use Reports will allow you to compare, filter
and sort critical, related data points across the Journal Use Reports interface.
1. Start by formatting a Holdings file or COUNTER-compliant vendor usage report into a commadelimited file with a .csv or .txt file extension or into an Excel file with an .xls or .csv file
extension. The file is then ready for import.
o Holdings imports can take up to 15 minutes to process.
o Vendor Usage file imports will take less time to process.
2. After a holdings upload is complete, click the View Merged List button to view the results
and/or make changes to the Holdings Identifier.
o Select or clear the Holdings Identifier check box for any journal title. A check mark
indicates that the journal will appear on the Journal List page in Journal Use Reports.
o This feature can help you identify problems with journal titles before you submit your
Holdings to Journal Use Reports. For example, you can select a journal title to indicate
that a journal in ISI Web of Knowledge is also in your institution's Holdings even if a
match was not found in the upload.
o Click the Save Changes and Exit Merged List button to save any changes you make to the
merged journal list.
After a Vendor Usage data upload is complete, enter the vendor’s name in the space provided or
select the vendor’s name from a drop-down list. Then submit the data for overnight processing.
3. See HELP files for more information.

JOURNAL USE REPORTS – PUBLICATION ACTIVITY AND PROFILE MANAGEMENT
Creating Publication Activity Profiles allows you to retrieve information, including citation rates, on
journals that published articles by researchers at your institution.
The designated profile manager can select an unlimited number of addresses for storing in institutional
profiles. During processing, data is collected when the profile is searched against the 3-year Web of
Science and Journal Citation Reports data set. The compiled data are analyzed and the data become
available for viewing.

JOURNAL USE REPORTS DATA ELEMENTS
Once your library’s Holdings and Vendor Usage data have been uploaded and the Publication Activity
Profile has been created, users can take advantage of all the features Journal Use Reports has to offer,
including:
• Journal Summary Table – shows the list of articles over a 3-year data period associated with a
Publication Activity Profile. From this page, users can link to Journal Full Record and Article
Summary pages.
• Full Journal Record – displays data about the journal listed at the top of the page and may
include citation information collected from Journal Citation Reports, the number of articles from
the journal published by researchers at your institution, and Vendor Usage data that your
institution uploaded.
• Article Summary – displays a list of articles published by researchers at your institution. The
name of the Profile that you selected from the Journal Summary or Full Record page appears at
the top of the Article Summary page. A hit count below the Profile name displays the total
number of Profile articles published by researchers at your institution. Below the hit count are the
journal name, publisher name, ISSN, and the total number of articles published in the journal by
researchers at your institution. If your institution subscribes to Web of Science, clicking on the
article title will bring up the Web of Science Full Record page.
