Cell Organelles
The basic unit of Life
Examples of Cells
Cells are made up of organelles.
● Cell Organelles: Individual parts of a cell with a
specific function.
1. Nucleus
“New-clee-us””
● Controls all parts of the cell
● Has DNA (instructions for traits and
characteristics)
*Notice, found in BOTH plant and animal cells
2. Mitochondria
“Might-o-con-dree-uh”
● Main producer of
the cell’s energy.
*Notice, found in
BOTH plants & animals
mitochondria
3. Chloroplasts
“cl-oro-plast”
● Converts sunlight to energy in a process called
photosynthesis
*Notice, found in plant cells ONLY
Evens: A student thinks the
mitochondria holds the cell’s DNA.
Is he correct? Explain. (Use your notes!)
“I think he is correct/incorrect
because…”
4. Cell Membrane
● Protects the cell from
foreign substances.
Controls what
enters/leaves the cell.
*Notice, found in
BOTH plants & animals
“Cell Mem-brain”
5. Cell Wall
● Provides
structure for
plant cells
*Notice, found in plant
cells ONLY
Evens: How are cell walls different
from cell membranes? (Use your notes!)
“Cell walls are different than cell
membranes because…”
Odds: What type of cell is pictured
below? Explain. (Use your notes!)
“This is a ___ cell. I know
because…”
Evens: What type of cell is pictured
below? Explain. (Use your notes!)
“This is a ___ cell. I know because…”
Contrast animal and plant cells.
(Use your notes!)
Odds: “One thing plant cells have that
animal cells do not is ___.”
Evens: “Thank you for sharing. Another
thing is ____.”

chloroplasts
