Hagrid’s Dragons
Name
The purpose of this activity is to see what you know about genetics before we start this unit. To do this, you will
design a dragon that will mate with another and produce an offspring.
1. Your dragon is missing a few parts. To fix this, do the following to your dragon (Parent 1).
o Design and draw your dragon’s wing(s).
o Decide whether or not your dragon has a horn on its nose. If it does, draw it.
o Decide what color(s) your dragon is/are and color it that color.
2. Your dragon is going to mate with another dragon in your class. Find a partner and copy their dragon in
the Parent 2 space OR swap papers and have them copy their dragon into the Parent 2 space.
3. Congratulations! Your baby dragon has been born. With your partner, figure out what your baby’s
wings will look like, whether or not they will have a horn, and what color(s) your baby will be. Draw
these features on your offspring dragon.
4. Identify the gender of each member of your dragon family and write it in the space provided.
5. Complete the debrief questions at the back.
