Learning About Blood Cells Kids often believe that it is the Band-Aid that makes their cut better, so talking to them about how it’s really their amazing body that is healing them, allows them to be properly informed - they know that their cut will heal with or without the Band-Aid. For today’s invitation to play... We filled a basket with white pom poms - the white blood cells), red pom poms - the red blood cells, and some pinky coloured mosaic tiles - the platelets! We also added some white and red Magnetic Marbles to the basket so we could demonstrate the movement of the blood. We picked the basket up and placed the magnetic wand under the basket, swiping it from side to side to make the marbles move and push the other blood cells around in the process. We talked about how when we get cuts platelets from and help to clot the blood and create a scab so our wound can heal and doesn’t get infected. As through processing the information in a way that she could make sense of, Demi placed the ‘platelet’ on top of her Band-Aid covered cut and rested it there for a while. This experience was a brilliant, hands-on way for her to understand what was going on inside her body and how the healing process occurred. * Great foundations for further learning are laid through simple experiences like this one. Being able to explain to our children how important it is for us to have a healthy diet, be active and take good care of ourselves so that our bodies can take care of us is just one of the great experiences that might spin off from this experience.
