What is trigonometry?
Trigonometry
(from Greek trigōnon "triangle" + metron "measure")
is a branch of mathematics that studies triangles and the
relationships between their sides and the angles between the sides.
What are right triangles?
Right triangles are those that contain a 90o angle. This is usually
labelled with a square at one of the vertices of the triangle.
Basic triangle facts:
1) All triangles are made up of ______ sides and ______ angles.
2) The sum of all angles in any triangle add up to _______.
3) Capital or upper case letters are used to label
vertices of a triangle. Each side is labelled using
the corresponding lower case letter of the opposite vertex.
How are the measures of the 3
sides in any right triangle related?
1) On the middle of a graph paper,
join two sides measuring
3 cm and 4 cm at a 90o angle.
2) Close the triangle and measure
the length of the third side using a
ruler.
3) Create a square out of each of
the 3 sides of this triangle.
4) Find the area of each square
created. What do you notice?
