A Natural Approach to Pathogens
While much of medicine is focused on the germ theory of disease and
eradicating microbes as the causative agent of infection, it is equally
important to assess the patient’s terrain for their long term health
benefit. In that vein, PCHF not only offers practitioners a complete
line of products that assist the patient’s immune status, but we also
focus on the unique formulas necessary to enhance barrier strength
and build the terrain.
Microbes: Viral, Bacterial, Fungal,
and Parasitic
Viruses are found in almost every ecosystem on Earth as the most abundant
type of organism.They are responsible for a host of simple to complex infections
ranging from rhinovirus and influenza to HIV and SARS. Both RNA and DNA
viruses are an established cause of some types of cancer including certain
genotypes of human papillomavirus, hepatitis B and C, Epstein-Barr virus and
others. Infection with any of these viruses mentioned does not automatically
confer the development of cancer in an individual, as that is based on a variety of
factors including host immunity and genetic mutations.
Bacteria are ubiquitous in every habitat on Earth and there are approximately ten times the number of
bacteria in the body as there are human cells; the bacteria are primarily located in the gut and on the skin.
There are numerous beneficial bacteria in the GI system and this symbiotic relationship not only provides
essential nutrients such as Vitamin K and butyrate, the preferred fuel source of colonic cells, but also provides
the key neurotransmitter serotonin. It may be that the increased use of antibiotics in modern medicine
is killing off the beneficial bacteria responsible for producing this “feel good” neurotransmitter and is in
part responsible for an increase in prescriptions of antidepressants. Bacteria aggregate as biofilms and may
even play a role in orchestrating our own immune response. Pathogenic bacteria may cause self-limiting or
contagious infections, or we may simply be asymptomatically carrying them. As an example, most adults carry
at least one strain of streptococcus. The GI system of microflora works in constant flux; colonies of bacteria
are always vying for space and pathogens are frequently more virulent and strong growers. At the foundation
of all health protocols should be a daily probiotic to constantly crowd in beneficial bacteria making it harder
for pathogens to find space and colonize.
Funguses are part of a large family that includes yeasts and molds; while they are studied as a branch of
botany, they behave much more like animals or parasitic infections in the body. Some of the more serious
infectious agents include aspergilloses, candidoses, coccidioidomycosis, cryptococcosis, and histoplasmosis.
Immune deficient patients are especially susceptible to oppor tunistic fungal infections.
Parasites refer to both endoparasites causing infection within the body and
ectoparasites causing infection on the surface of the body. Primary transmission
is along the fecal-oral route and so the health emphasis is on hygiene, clean
water, and cooked food. Infections caused by protozoa include head lice, giardia
lamblia, entamoeba histolytica, blastocystis hominis, dientamoeba fragilis, and
cryptosporidium. Notable helminths include pinworms, roundworms, and
tapeworms. Common symptoms of parasitic infection include gastrointestinal
distress, joint aches, chronic fatigue, excessive hunger, and immune dysfunction.
Parasitic infections also contribute to a variety of major diseases including
Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, and rheumatoid symptoms. In the
United States, diarrhea caused by endoparasites is the third leading cause
of illness.
Vaccinations though somewhat controversial since their inception, have been used to stimulate an adaptive
immune response through exposure to a low dose antigenic substance. Their use has ameliorated the effects
of both bacterial and viral infection for millions of individuals around the world; at the same time, many
families are growing weary of vaccinating their young ones. There has been great concern surrounding
thimerosal, a mercury based preservative, and while it has been removed from many vaccines excluding
the influenza vaccine, it is usually replaced by yet another heavy metal based preservative. Practitioners can
consider single dose vaccines which are more expensive but are made without the preservative necessary

Pathogen Treatment
Treating the cause of infection is not always as easy as it sounds. Pathogens are opportunistic by nature and
their virulence can affect the course of disease, but the terrain and strength of the immune system also needs
to be considered.
Remember that lymphocytes will be elevated in viral infections while
neutrophils will be elevated in bacterial infections. Be sure to rule out dietary
or environmental allergens if eosinophils are present in any number.
A mildly depressed WBC count over a period of time points to a low-grade
viral infection. Consider Astragalus Complex (B3AST).
For the patient who is chronically ill, consider sarcode or glandular support
of the thymus such as Thymus Drops (HTMD) or Immustim Complex (GIMC).
Patients consistently consuming their food intolerances will have weakened
immune systems.
Potentially harmful acidic terrain can invite infection. Consider BioTerrian
Alkaline Powder (SBTA) or Capsules (SBTAC) to assist in establishing homeostasis
by balancing acidic terrain. These buffered ingredients also help with digestion
and provide a good source of calcium and magnesium.
Reducing Stress and Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
Stress is a potent inhibitor of the immune system. Not only does stress deplete magnesium levels, but perceived
stress is magnified with magnesium deficiency and optimum levels are necessary for the proper functioning
of the immune system. Without magnesium, stress and illness become a vicious cycle. At the same time,
patients are frequently complaining of poor sleep quality only compounding their suppressed immune function.
Phosphatidyl serine at bedtime re-sensitizes the body to cortisol, deepens sleep, and helps patients wake rested.
Encourage them to take a time out and breathe deeply from the tummy every day, and raise their endorphin
levels by having them think about something that makes them smile. Consider some of our favorite products, Alka
