Summer Reading Study Questions
Please answer these questions as you read your book and type them up. Bring this handout and your
typed answers to school with you on Friday, September 9th, to assist you with a focused novel
discussion and/or in-class assignment.
1.
What is your first reaction to the book (roughly first 20-30 pages)?
2.
What character(s) do you particularly like or dislike? Explain why.
3.
What do you see to be the theme (this could be a strict literary theme or a looser one)?
4.
How does the author get the theme across to the reader (don’t forget to consider setting, tone/mood
here)? Give some examples from the story to show why you think this is the theme.
5.
How does this theme relate to your own life? This may be challenging to answer, but remember that
themes are universal and timeless messages about life or human nature.
6.
As you continued to read the book, how did your reaction to the book change (beginning to middle, middle
to end)?
7.
What is your final reaction to the book? Consider the following in your answer:
**Was it well written?
**Does it keep your interest?
**If it is a “great” book, give reasons why. If you did not like it, give reasons why you did not like it.
**What type of reader would like to read this book?
