The story Aeneid tells the story of what journey? Who wrote Aeneid? The journey of Aeneas from Troy to Italy. It was written by Virgil. 8. Who were the Latins? The group of people Aeneas made an alliance with after arriving in Italy. 9. Summarize the story of Romulus and Remus. As babies, Romulus and Remus were thrown into the Tiber River. A wolf rescued them and raised them until a shepherd found and adopted them one day. Later, Romulus and Remus built the city of Rome. After making fun of one of Romulus's ideas, Remus was killed by his twin brother. 10. Who was the first king of Rome? Romulus 11. Who were the Etruscans? A people who were from a region north of Rome who ruled Rome for a time. 12. What significant event happened in Rome in 509 B.C.? The Romans overthrew the Etruscan king. 13. What new form of government did the Romans form? Describe this form of government. The formed a republic which is a government where people elect leaders to rule them. 14. Why was Rome not considered a democracy? Only the wealthy/nobility were elected and held power in the republic. 15. Who ruled the republic in times of emergency, like war? How long could this person rule? Dictators ruled during these times and could only rule for six months. 16. Who was Cincinnatus? A famous and well-respected Roman dictator who led Rome to defeat a mighty army. He gave up his power before the six month period ended. 17. Who were the plebian and patricians? Please look at the chart on page 299 to help you with your answer. The plebeians were the common people in Rome. Many were peasants, craftspeople, and traders. They made up the majority of the Roman population but were not initially allowed to participate in the government. The patricians were the nobility of Rome. They were wealthy and the minority of the population in Rome. They controlled all aspects of the government until the plebeians began to make demands.
