Vocabulary
• Inner core- the sphere of solid nickel and iron at the
center of Earth; surrounded by the liquid outer core
• Outer core- the outer shell of Earth’s core; surrounds
the inner core and is made of liquid nickel and iron
• Mantle-The solid layer of Earth’s interior that lies
above the outer core and is solid yet flows slowly
• Crust- the thin solid outermost layer of Earth; made of
less dense silicates and is continental(landmasses) or
oceanic(ocean bottoms)
• Lithosphere- layer of Earth that consists of the crust
and the uppermost part of the mantle
• Asthenosphere-the solid layer with plasticity in the
upper mantle located just below the lithosphere;
lithospheric plates “float” and move on this layer
• Plasticity- condition of material in the asthenosphere ,
existing in a solid state yet flowing like a liquid
• Model- represents an object or event in the natural
world
Process Skills TEKS must be incorporated into
instruction as appropriate throughout the school year.

Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts
•
Students may not understand that the material in the mantle is a solid that has plasticity therefore it is able to flow
slowly.
