President’s Note:
Direction Team’s Note:
Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s collaboration
for Wicked undoubtedly produced an extremely
marketable product. This became abundantly clear
with the unprecedented number of auditionees last
November, all with a thorough knowledge and almost
fanatical love for the show. This early indication
heralded our induction as directors into a passion and
enthusiasm for the piece which seemed boundless and
extraordinary.
While admittedly finding some difficulty with
the convolutions of Maguire’s original story and
Holzman’s interpretation, it undoubtedly had all the
proven elements of entertainment, with generous
doses of good and evil, political corruption, clashing
personalities, romance and unrequited love, not to
mention revenge, violence and witchcraft.
We think its real strength, however, lies in a masterfully
thematic musical score, with powerful and evocative
melodies and orchestrations which describe the power
of supernatural drama absolutely. The strength and
talent of our cast is remarkable and amongst the best
we’ve worked with. We have now become Wicked’s
latest devotees. We think you will see our point.
Chris, Lynette and Danny
It gives me great pleasure as the President of CLOC to welcome you to
“Oz” to experience the magic of Wicked.
The announcement of each new show is the beginning of an exciting and
rewarding journey that reaches a fitting finale in what you see tonight.
While you see 33 people on the stage, what you don’t see are the nearly
250 people off the stage who come together, offering their talents,
time and experience in creating the high level of artistic and technical
excellence of which CLOC is so justifiably proud.
The size of a production such as Wicked can never be underestimated –
from sets, costumes, wigs, lights, sound, special effects, orchestra, and of
course the cast, each department has blended together because of a love
of theatre that keeps them coming back and striving to keep producing
these high quality productions for you – our loyal patrons.
CLOC is always on the look out for dedicated people to join us in
assisting to mount our productions, so if you are interested and want to
experience this magic, please get in contact with us through our website
– we’d love to hear from you.
For a production of this grand scale we are delighted to reunite the team
that did such a magnificent job on our sell-out season of Mary Poppins
last year. Heading the creative team are Chris and Lynette White (CoDirectors/Choreographer), who together with Danny Forward (Musical
Director) have brought together a stellar cast of talented individuals who
give justice to the vocally demanding score.
We are excited to welcome back Vicky Horne in Costume Design after
her recent Music Theatre Guild Award win for her work on Mary Poppins
and Chris White (again doing double duty) who has outdone himself
with a jaw dropping set design, along with Brad Alcock (Lighting Design)
and Marcello Lo Ricco (Sound Design), who each bring amazing skill and
perfection to this production.
As you prepare to enjoy this very special performance, we invite you back
again in October as we present the rock classic Jesus Christ Superstar.
But for now, sit back, relax and come with us to the Emerald City and
experience the story of what happened before Dorothy came to Oz. Cameron Osborne

Chris White
Co-Director/Set Designer
Chris has been involved in theatre for over
40 years, having started out as Publicity
Designer for J.C. Williamson, Melbourne
Theatre Company and The Australian
Ballet. This led to onstage performances
in musicals, as well as direction and
design in professional and amateur
theatre. He has produced, directed and
designed over 40 musicals in as many
years. Since retiring from a long‑standing
teaching career, Chris is now a full-time
professional artist and designer, having
won over 60 major art awards for his
work (including the Streeton award
(twice), the McCubbin award (three
times) and the Heysen Prize). Some of
his noted direction and/or set designs
include Steel Pier (CLOC), Sweeney Todd
(twice-CLK and Nova), Joseph & The
Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and
Seussical (Whitehorse), Into The Woods
(Dandenong), and Les Miserables, Anything
Goes and Oklahoma! (all for Catchment).
For CLOC, he and Lynette co‑directed (and
Chris designed) Dusty (2010), Fiddler on
the Roof (2011), Guys and Dolls (2013)
and last year’s spectacular Mary Poppins.
Chris also painted stunning backdrops for
our productions of All Shook Up and The
Phantom of the Opera. We welcome Chris
back to CLOC, again doing double duties
as Director and Set Designer.
Danny Forward
Lynette White
Co-Director/Choreographer
For over 30 years, Lynette has been a major
force in choreography and direction in the
Melbourne music theatre scene, working with
major theatre companies including Whitehorse
(My One and Only, Gypsy, Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolour Dreamcoat, Beauty and the Beast,
Seussical), Catchment (My Fair Lady, Pippin,
Chicago, Annie, Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease),
Babirra (The Desert Song, The Whitehorse Inn),
and Festival (La Cage Aux Folles, Barnum). She
worked for several years with the Department
of Education as the director/choreographer
for the Victorian Schools Spectacular, doing
shows such as Oklahoma!, The Wiz, Little Shop
of Horrors, Chicago, Into the Woods and The
Pirates of Penzance. She also choreographed
and produced the Rock Eisteddfods. With
husband Chris, she has also co-directed
and choreographed many shows, including
Oklahoma!, Sweeney Todd (twice), Anything
Goes, Oliver!, Les Miserables, Into the Woods and
Pippin. For CLOC, Lynette choreographed our
1998 production of A Chorus Line, as well as
our 2009 premiere blockbuster Miss Saigon. In
2010, she choreographed and co-directed Dusty
with husband Chris, followed by Fiddler on the
Roof in 2011, Guys and Dolls in 2013, and last
year’s premiere production of Mary Poppins.
Lynette and Chris make a formidable and multi-talented production team, perfect for a
show of this magnitude and scale.

Musical Director
Originally from Brisbane, Danny is now
a much valued and beloved member of
the Melbourne musical theatre scene.
For Beaumaris Theatre, Danny was a
committee member for eight years and
musically directed, composed and/or
performed music for twelve productions,
including their much acclaimed 2010
production of I Love You, You’re Perfect,
Now Change, which he also co‑directed and
designed. For other companies, Danny has
worked as Musical Director for MLOC (Cats,
Beauty and the Beast, Pippin, Camelot), Fab
Nobs (Rent, Grease, Avenue Q, It’s a Bird, It’s
a Plane, It’s Superman), MDMS (Guys and
Dolls) and Babirra (Annie, Crazy for You,
The Boy from Oz). As well, he has worked
with Aspect, Catchment, MOTTS, New Beat,
PLOS and Whitehorse, either as Musical
Director, audition and rehearsal pianist
or pit player. In 2010, he was honoured at
the Annual Music Theatre Guild Awards
when he received the Musicians Award for
Excellence. In 2008, Danny worked on his
first CLOC production, The Boy from Oz,
working as rehearsal pianist and as part of
the on-stage orchestra. He then worked on
nine consecutive CLOC shows, capping off
an incredible run by winning Best Musical
Director of 2012 for our Production of the
Year, All Shook Up. Danny returned to CLOC
last year to work as Musical Director for
Mary Poppins, and was delighted to do an
encore production with Chris and Lynette.
Victoria Horne
Costume Designer
Vicky has been designing and
creating costumes for secondary
school musicals, dance schools
and calisthenics competitions
for over twenty years, before
moving successfully into adult
musical theatre. She received Guild
nominations for the two PLOS shows
she designed – Cabaret (2006) and
Thoroughly Modern Millie (2008).
For CLOC, Vicky started on the
sewing team for Shout!, and then
either designed and/or coordinated
costumes for Hot Shoe Shuffle
(2008-Guild nomination), Miss
Saigon (2009), Dusty (2010-Guild
nomination), Fiddler on the Roof
(2011), All Shook Up (2012-Guild
nomination), Guys and Dolls (2013)
and our 100th production 42nd Street
(2014-Guild nomination). She then
took her sequins and feathers with
her to Babirra, where she won more
plaudits for her superb designs for
Crazy for You (Guild award). Last
year, Vicky designed the costumes for
both our productions, Mary Poppins
and The Drowsy Chaperone, and
won the Guild award for the second
consecutive year, this time with CLOC
for Poppins. We are delighted to
welcome Vicky back for CLOC show
number 11, in which she has found
it easy to keep up her tradition of
ensuring each costume has at least
one sequin on it somewhere.

Rosa McCarty
Emily McKenzie
A university academic in biomedical science by day,
Rosa transforms into a multi-talented music theatre
performer at night. Originally from Adelaide, Rosa has
built up an enviable and prolific list of music theatre
credentials and accolades since moving to Melbourne
in 2008. Since 2010 alone, she has featured in over
twenty productions and/or concerts, including
three appearances with CLOC (Aldonza in Man of La
Mancha-2010, Rose in Aspects of Love-2011 (Guild
nomination) and the title role in last year’s spectacular
production of Mary Poppins (Guild nomination)). Other
highlights have included the title roles in Kiss of the
Spider Woman (SHooSH) and Dusty (WilliamstownGuild nomination), Nancy in Oliver! (Babirra-Guild
nomination), Queenie in The Wild Party (Four Letter
Word Theatre), and Florence in Chess (Catchment),
a show she also performed with The Production
Company. In 2012, Rosa won the Guild award for Best
Actress for her stunning portrayal of Diana in Next
to Normal (Williamstown). With Elphaba and Mary
Poppins, Rosa not only gets to bookend two of her most
treasured roles, but also gets to fly again, only this time
with a broom instead of an umbrella!
Emily has made a double name for herself in
Melbourne theatre over the last ten plus years. As Emily
Doran, she played a number of lead roles, including
Lucille Frank (Parade-Monash University), Marta
(Company-Devanesen Productions), Cathy (The Last
Five Years-Devanesen, Guild nomination), and four lead
roles with PLOS - Belle (Beauty and the Beast-Guild
nomination), Liza Minnelli (The Boy from Oz), The Lady
of the Lake (Spamalot) and Maria (The Sound of Music).
In 2008, Emily made an adorable Gertrude McFuzz in
Chris and Lynette White’s stunning and memorable
production of Seussical (Whitehorse Musical Theatre),
which received an incredible eight Guild and four
Lyrebird awards, including nominations for Emily.
Since her 2011 marriage to Heath, she has worked as
Emily McKenzie, playing Heidi in [title of show] with
Williamstown/Fab Nobs, as well as Jo March in Little
Women (Oxagen Productions), for which she received
yet another Guild nomination. Emily’s only previous
CLOC show was as Nellie in Jekyll & Hyde (2005). A
lot has happened in the eleven years since – marriage
to Heath and two adorable children, who have been
Emily’s proudest productions - toddler Ava and baby
Oscar, who unfortunately will be too young to see Mum
descend in a bubble to become Glinda the Good Witch
of the North.

- SYNOPSIS ACT 1
The citizens of Oz are celebrating the death of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of
the West. As Glinda the Good appears to reassure the people that goodness has
prevailed over evil, she admits that she and Elphaba were once friends, and
tells the story in flashback of how they met.
Elphaba is the daughter of the governor of Munchkinland, and was born with
green skin. Her father shunned her, and showered his affection on her younger
sister, Nessarose, who is confined to a wheelchair. The two girls go together
to Shiz University, where the pretty and popular Galinda is also in their class.
Elphaba and Galinda take an instant dislike to each other, exacerbated when
they are roomed together and when Elphaba inadvertently shows magical
powers, which causes the headmistress Madame Morrible to fawn on her.
A handsome roguish prince, Fiyero, arrives at Shiz, and Galinda is charmed,
oblivious to the fact that another student, a munchkin Boq, is smitten with
her. At the Stardust Ballroom Dance, Galinda has eyes only for Fiyero, and
persuades Boq to ask Nessarose to dance. Nessarose immediately falls
for Boq and is full of gratitude towards Galinda. Elphaba turns up at the
dance wearing a black hat which Galinda had given her as a joke. As people
laugh at Elphaba, Galinda’s guilt makes her try to help Elphaba and a new
friendship is born.
Elphaba attends history class with Dr Dillamond, the only animal
professor at the university, who is suffering from the effects of a
conspiracy to stop the animals from speaking. When Dr Dillamond
tells the class he is leaving as he is no longer permitted to teach,
Elphaba is outraged and feels she must meet the Wizard to tell him,
so he can fix this.
Elphaba and Galinda prepare to go to the Emerald City to meet the
Wizard. As they leave, to try to impress Fiyero, Galinda changes
her name to Glinda as an outward show of solidarity with Dr
Dillamond. Soon, the two girls are standing before the Wizard and
his new Press Secretary, Madame Morrible. After a confrontation
involving a levitation spell on the Wizard’s monkey servant
Chistery, Elphaba realizes that the Wizard is the one behind the
suppression of the animals and that he has no powers. She runs
away, and in order to prevent the truth from getting out, Madame
Morrible spreads reports that Elphaba is “wicked,” and not to be
trusted. After Glinda refuses to join her, Elphaba performs a spell
on a broom and flies away, leaving Glinda behind.
16
- SYNOPSIS ACT 2
Elphaba is now known as “The Wicked Witch of the West”. “Glinda the Good”
has become the smiling public front of the Wizard’s regime, with Fiyero by
her side as her reluctant fiancé.
Elphaba pays a visit to Nessarose, who is now the governor of
Munchkinland following the death of their father, and is desperately trying
to keep an unwilling Boq by her side. Elphaba tries to help by giving
Nessarose the power to walk, which Boq sees as his means to freedom and
attempts to leave. In desperation, Nessarose tries to cast a spell to make
Boq stay and fall in love with her. However, the spell backfires, shrinking
Boq’s heart, and to save his life, Elphaba works another spell, one which
leaves Boq as a man made of tin without a heart.
Elphaba returns to the Wizard’s palace to free the monkey servants, and
comes across the Wizard himself. Upon seeing Dr. Dillamond who has lost
his power of speech, she vows to fight the Wizard until the end. Fiyero and
the guards enter, followed by Glinda. Fiyero helps Elphaba to escape, and
decides to go with her, leaving Glinda behind and broken hearted, while
Elphaba and Fiyero admit their love for each other.
Glinda and Elphaba meet again at the site where Nessarose has been
crushed during a tornado by a house with a girl named Dorothy inside.
Fueled by the rivalry over Fiyero, the two have a heated argument.
Having been tipped off by Glinda, the guards arrive, followed quickly by
Fiyero, who tries to help Elphaba escape. The guards turn on Fiyero and
tie him up to a pole in the field. Elphaba tries to cast a spell to save his
life and protect him from injury, but only succeeds in turning him into a
scarecrow. In despair, she decides that from this point on, she will live
up to her ‘wicked’ reputation.
The citizens of Oz set out to capture Elphaba. Glinda has realized
Madame Morrible, who can control the weather, is responsible for
Nessarose’s death. Glinda travels to Elphaba’s castle to warn her of the
danger she is in. The two women forgive each other for all grievances
and embrace for the last time before saying goodbye forever. Elphaba
forces Glinda to hide, who then watches from the shadows as Dorothy
throws a bucket of water on Elphaba, who appears to melt away.
Grief-stricken, Glinda returns to the Emerald City and confronts the
Wizard with Elphaba’s bottle of green elixir, which she recognizes as
having seen before while visiting Oz. The Wizard realises that he is
Elphaba’s biological father, and the cause of her green skin. He breaks
down in agony, and Madame Morrible surmises that Elphaba’s
powers were so strong because she was a child of two worlds. Glinda
orders the Wizard to leave Oz and sends Madame Morrible to prison
for murdering Nessarose.
Meanwhile, back at the castle, Fiyero (now a scarecrow) comes to
the spot where Elphaba was melted, and they are reunited; her
melting was a ruse to convince her enemies of her death and to
ensure her future with Fiyero. Before leaving, Elphaba regrets that
she’ll never see Glinda again. Simultaneously, Glinda reports to the
people of Oz that the Wicked Witch of the West has been killed
and promises to properly earn her title as Glinda the Good. As the
people celebrate and while Glinda mourns, Elphaba and Fiyero
leave Oz forever.

adult novel, Wicked. A devotee of children’s fantasy, Maguire’s
subsequent novels for adults are variations-on-a-theme:
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister considers Cinderella as a
seventeenth-century maid from Haarlem; Lost evokes the
ghost of Charles Dickens’s Scrooge; and Mirror Mirror features
a High Renaissance Snow White daunted by the wickedest
stepmother, Lucrezia Borgia. Maguire’s novel Son of a Witch,
a sequel to Wicked, is followed by volume III of the Wicked
Years, A Lion Among Men, and concludes with the final novel
in the Wicked Years, Out of Oz. He lives in Massachusetts and
