Pit and Fissure Sealant
Definition
 A fissure sealant is a material that is placed
in the pits and fissures of teeth in order to
prevent or arrest the development of
dental caries.
 It is aprofessional preventive procedure.
Introduction
pits and fissures are the susceptible areas for the
initiation of dental caries (shape,depth)
 Occlusal surface the most affected surfaces.
 Fissure sealant is underutilized.
 It should be cheap, accessible for larger population.

Early attempts to reduce
occlusal caries:
• 1- Hyatt in 1923:
• prophylactic odontomy technique
Bodecker in 1929: fissure eradication
Klein and Knutson in 1942: chemical
agents- ammoniacal silver nitrate
Bowen in 1965: developed the BisGMA resin the organic
matrix Bisphenol-Glycidyl methacrylate
.
Cariostatic action of sealants:
• Sealed surface is 2000 fold less in
bacteria than non sealed.
• Even for carious surface physical properity
of sealant by prevent bact. To produce
acid in cariogenic conc.
