MS Robotics
Mr. Carpenter
Curricular connection: technology, design, math, science, communications
Description: Robotics is a hands-on, collaborative, authentic learning experience where students
will learn programming, mechanical design, problem solving, and teamwork. In this elective Grade
6 students will develop coding skills, receive an introduction to the MS CEESA Robotics competition
format, and undertake a research project that is an integral part of this year's competition. Using
Lego EV3 Robotics kits, beginning students can get started with easy-to-use robots; experienced
robotics students can further develop their abilities, particularly with sensors and increasingly
complex engineering.
Learning Outcomes: All students will enhance their 21st-Century Skills, including:




thinking creatively, conducting effective research, reasoning systematically,
communicating clearly, and working collaboratively
theory and practice that allows students to program a computer
a discipline that emphasizes persistence in problem solving — a skill that is applicable
across disciplines and career paths
skills to use computers to create, not just consume
Succeed and Achieve
Mrs. Forster
Curricular Connection: Approaches to Learning
Description/Learning Outcomes: The purpose of Succeed and Achieve is to assist students in
developing or refining academic skills. These skills include organization, study habits, learning
habits, and self- advocacy. Admission to this program will include teacher and administrator
referrals and the completion of a skills checklist to document areas in which the child is in need of
service. Students will have the opportunity to learn and apply these skills to specific lessons and
situations throughout the quarter. While students will be able to complete and revise assigned
subject area work during Succeed and Achieve classes, the focus is on the effective application of
academic skills in authentic situations.
Students in the Succeed and Achieve Elective will have been placed there by the grade level team.
Behind a Mask
Ms. Maya
Curricular Connection: Drama
Elective Description: The elective is an exploration of a mask drama.
The students will learn the importance of Movement in acting through various techniques of mask:
focus, body precision, playing space awareness, sense of rhythm, characterization, improvisation
and devising as a mask ensemble.
Learning Outcomes:
 Drama techniques and a performance(s)
My Digital Footprint
Mrs. Cushman
(Quarter 2 - 6th Graders with last names G-J)
Curricular Connection: Technology Operations and Concepts, All Core Content Areas
Description: Technology is a huge part of our everyday life. It is also a major component of how we
communicate with people. In this elective we explore the meaning of digital citizenship and
examine its' impact on our daily lives, our education and the ways it could affect our future. You will
engage in research, discussion, debates, reflection and eventually create a digital medial
presentation showing what you have learned about your digital footprint and how to ensure you
are using technology to the greatest benefit for yourself and others.
Learning Outcomes:
 Understand the meaning of digital citizenship
 Explore how digital citizenship affects your life
 Analyze and evaluate the effects of improper and proper behavior with media and social
values
 Discuss and collaborate with peers on a digital media presentation to convey learning to
others about appropriate technology usage
Scary Stories: A Reading and Writing Workshop
Ms. Johnson
Curricular connection: ELA
Description: Do you like reading scary stories? Have you ever wished that you could write stories
so scary they made your readers' skin crawl? If so, look no further. In this elective, we will read
creepy, crawly stories from famous horror writers like Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, and R.L.
Stine, figuring out just what makes them so scary. After learning all about the horror genre, we will
craft scary stories of our very own!
Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to:
 Identify important writers and elements in the horror genre
 Create fully-developed story maps and outlines before beginning writing
 Develop logical and sequential narratives that follow a plot outline.
Industrious Design
Ms. Pendleton
Curricular Connection: Visual Art & Design
Description: Industrious Design is a fusion of art, design, and 3D construction. Creativity,
engineering, and ingenuity collide, bringing students to the forefront of the 21st Century “Maker
Culture”. Students will investigate composition and form with the help of the Principles of Design.
Students will develop their ideas from a sketch to a prototype to a final product. Fabrication
mediums include cardboard, found objects, and foam board.
Learning Outcomes: In this course, students will:
 Learn to communicate effectively as designers using artistic vocabulary (Elements of Art &
Principles of Design).
 Explore the aesthetics of engineering and design.
 Create 2D & 3D design projects including blueprints and sculptures.
 Explore individual and group systems thinking.
Dance & Movement
Mr. Trofimchuk
Curricular Connection: Physical Education
Description: In Dance class, students will learn the basic dance steps (movements) and the simple
combinations from the following dance styles: Street dance (hip-hop, breakdancing, house), Zumba,
Ballroom Dancing (waltz, tango, swing), Latin dance (salsa, cha-cha, merengue). Dance class
