EQUATIONS
equation
variable
A mathematical sentence that contains
an equals sign (=).
A letter that stands for a number in an
expression or equation.
Example:
x + 7 = 10
2x + 3 = 9
4 x = 12
Example:
The “=” sign means “has the same value as.” 2 x + 3 = 11
variable
In this example, the x represents the
number 4.
isolate the variable
coefficient
The process of getting the variable by
itself on one side of the equals sign in
an equation.
The number multiplied by a variable.
To isolate the variable, its coefficient
must be +1.
Example:
2 x + 3 = 11
coefficient
When the coefficient is +1 or -1 it is
often not written.

The process of replacing a variable with
a number.
Pairs of operations that undo each
other.
Example: 3x + 5
