WHY IS ESTEEM® DIFFERENT?
The Esteem device is not a better hearing aid, because it
is not even a hearing aid. It is not a cochlear implant or a
bone anchored hearing aid. The Esteem is so different
from anything else on the market that it created a new
class of device. It is a fully implanted hearing prosthetic
that does not have an artificial microphone (unlike every
other hearing device on the market).
Because it uses your natural ear drum as a microphone,
issues that are common in hearing implants or aids such
as distortion, occlusion, feedback, and lack of clarity are

treatment of moderate to severe sensorineural (nerverelated) hearing loss that is completely implanted with

Problems such as discomfort, moisture in the ear, ear
wax, daily cleaning, and maintenance are non-existent
because there is nothing in the ear canal.

HOW DOES ESTEEM® WORK?
The Esteem is sophisticated technology, designed to
leverage the natural mechanics of the ear. When we hear
naturally, it’s the natural vibration of the eardrum that is
carried through the middle ear, to the cochlea where the
hair cells are stimulated, and ultimately to the brain
where these signals are interpreted and processed as
sound.
Sound enters your outer ear and funnels down your ear
canal causing your eardrum to vibrate. All as it naturally
would.

First, we will discover if you have the correct type of
hearing loss for the Esteem device. If you already have
an audiogram from your last hearing consultation, you or
your provider can simply send us a copy. If you need to
have an audiogram done, we are more than happy to let
you know what tests are needed for review as well as
locate a hearing center near you.
Next, we will discuss the cost of Esteem and different
things to keep in mind (like the tax-deductible benefits).
The Esteem, like so many life-changing technologies, is
an investment in a better life that should be thought
through and understood. We’ll look at the costs over
your lifetime and help you compare that to hearing aids

Although Esteem is not currently covered by Medicare,
Medicaid, or most private insurers, it is covered by AT&T
Care Plus. Your Esteem Counselor will help you find the
best way to make this investment in a better quality of life.
Finally, we will connect you with a specialized ENT
doctor in your area; an Esteem Surgeon who has
extensive clinical experience in ear surgery. All surgeons
performing the Esteem implant are also rigorously trained
by Envoy Medical on the specifics of this technology.
How long does the battery last?
One of the very important advantages Esteem provides is
that the battery does not need to be changed for years.
Battery life depends on how the Esteem is used. In most
cases, the life ranges from 4.5 to 9 years.
How do I change my battery?
The battery is changed during a simple outpatient
procedure performed by your Esteem Surgeon. Because
the battery and sound processor are one in the same,
Esteem technology improvements are included at the
same time.

How does Esteem differ from a cochlear implant?
Both devices are implanted, but this is where the
similarities end. A cochlear implant is an inner ear
implant and the Esteem is a middle ear implant. A
cochlear implant has an external sound processor with a
microphone which is worn behind-the-ear (BTE).
Cochlear implant recipients have to pay careful attention
to the same lifestyle limitations of hearing aids. Because
it is fully implanted, Esteem enables you to live a more
effortless, spontaneous and connected life.
The two systems also differ in the degree of hearing loss
they treat. A cochlear implant is typically for people with
moderate to profound hearing loss in low frequencies
and profound hearing loss in the mid to high speech
frequencies. The Esteem is indicated for the most
common type of hearing loss—moderate to severe
nerve-related (sensorineural) hearing loss.
