HealthandSicknessPolicy
Eachfamilyisresponsibleforinformingtheschoolofanyallergies,disabilities,orphobias
theirchildmighthave.Achildwhoisnotingoodhealth(bydecisionofateacherorthe
principal)mustreturnhome.Ingeneral,achildwhoisnotabletoparticipateinallschool
activitiesisnotwellenoughtobeinschool.Whenachildbecomesillduringtheday,the
schoolwillcontacttheparents.Itisthenthefamily’sresponsibilitytopickthechildup
withinanhour.Futuraskolan’ssickpolicyhasbeencreatedinordertohelpparents
determinewhentheirchildshouldstayathomeoriftheirchildiswellenoughtoattend
school.Inorderforachildtocometoschool,heorsheshouldbewellenoughtoparticipate
inallactivitiesandeattheregularfoodprovided.Whenyourchildissickandstayinghome,
pleaseregisteryourchildassickonSchoolsoftbefore8:30am.
GeneralSickRoutines
Ifachildgetssickatschool,wemakesurethatheorshecanliedowninacalmareatorest
underadultsupervision.Thechild’sguardian(s)orotheremergencycontactpeoplewillbe
called,andthechildshouldthenbepickedupassoonaspossible.Inuncertaincases,the
staffwillcontacttheguardian(s)anddecideifthechildshouldbepickedupornot.
CommonIllnesses
Fever
Childrenwithafevershouldstayhome.Theycanreturntotheschoolafterafever-free
periodof24hours.
Colds(mostoftenviral)
Thecommoncoldismostlycontagiousrightbeforeitbreaksoutaswellasduringthefirst
fewdayswheneyesandnosearerunny.Afteracoupleofdaysofstayinghome,andwhen
thegeneralhealthallowsit,thechildcanreturnevenwithsomesymptomsofacoldand/or
cough.
EarInfection(Notcontagious)
Thechildshouldstayathomeuntilthefeverandpainisgone,usuallytwotothreedaysif
antibioticsareprescribed.
StrepThroat(StreptococcusInfection)
Strepthroatisgenerallynon-contagiousafterthefirst48hoursoftreatmentwithpenicillin.
Thechildshouldstayhomeuntilhisorhergeneralhealthisbacktonormal,usuallythree
days.
ChickenPox(Vattkoppor)
Chickenpoxhasa10-26dayincubationperiod(mostcommonly10-16).Itisverycontagious
fromthedaybeforetheblistersappearuntilalloftheblistersaredriedup,whichusually
takesaboutaweek.Thechildisallowedtobeintheschoolwithacoupleofdriedscabsbut
cannothaveanyfreshblisters.
StomachBugs,diarrheaand/orvomiting
Withdiarrheaandvomiting,thechildshouldstayathomeuntilheorshecandigestfood
regularlyagain.Thechild’sstoolshouldbenormalforatleast24hours.Generallyifachild’s
firstsymptomsofdiarrheashowinschool,theparentswillbecalled.
EyeInfection
Thisisverycontagious.Childshouldbe100%well.Nocrustorpussshouldbefoundinthe
eyesatall.
PinWorms(Enterobiusvermicularis,Springmask)
Theparasiticwormisspreadbycontaminatedhandsandobjects.Thechildcancomeback
toschoolafterhavingbeenmedicated.
Headlice
Thechildcanreturntoschoolaftertreatmentwithanyoftheanti-headliceproductsfound
atthepharmacy(Apoteket).Pleasecheckyourchild’sheadroutinelyforlicetoprevent
outbreaksatschool.
Impetigo(Svinkoppor)
Blistersshouldbeallgonebeforethechildreturnstotheschool.Theyarepartiallybrown
andpartiallyhoneycoloredsoresandscabsandareusuallycausedbythesame
streptococcusstrainthatcausesstrepthroat,"Streptococcuspyogenes”.Itmayalsobe
causedby“Staphylococcusaureus”.Ifachildhassoresandscabsontheirface,onemight
suspectImpetigo.Itusuallyappearstogetherwithacold.Impetigoshouldbetreatedwith
liquidsoapandwater.Washmanytimesdailysothatthescabsfalloff.Iftheinfectionis
wide-spread,antibioticswillbeprescribed.Soresshouldbecompletelyhealedbeforethe
childreturnstopre-school.
TheWinterStomachBug(causedbythe“CaliciVirus”,vinterkräksjukan)
Thewinterstomachbugisverycontagious.Tominimizethespreadingofit,childrenand
adultsmuststayhome48hoursafterthelastsymptoms.Goodhygieneisveryimportantto
preventthespreadingofthestomachbug.Ifachildoradultgetssickwhileatschool,they
mustwashtheirhands,forearms,andfacewithsoap.Theyshouldalsochangetheirclothes.
Anystaffthatassistedisrequiredtochangeand/orwashanyclothesorareasthatmayhave
comeincontactwiththevomit.
UnexplainedRash
Itistheguardian’sdutytomakesurethatachild’srashisnon-contagiousandofnoharmto
thechildorothersaroundhimorher.Ifindoubt,thechildshouldbetakentoaphysician
beforebeingtakentoschool.
UnspecificSignsofIllnesses
Someillnessesmaycausethechildtolookandactdifferently.Theremaybeunusual
paleness,irritability,unusualtirednessorlackofinterest.Ifthechildrequiresmore
attentionandcarethanouradult/childratiosallowand/orneedsassessmentbya
physician,heorsheshouldnotbeinschool.Ifyourchildcontractsanycommunicable
diseaseorcondition,pleasenotifytheprincipaloryourchild’steacherofthedoctor’s
diagnosis.Anoticewillbeposted(withoutusingname)sothatteachersandotherfamilies
canbeonthelookoutforsymptoms.
Medication
Ingeneralwewillnotbeadministeringanyformofmedicationtothechildren.Ifachildis
onanyformofantibioticsorothershort-termmedication,itshouldbeadministeredat
homebeforecomingtoschool.Wemustalsoreceiveparentalpermissionbefore
administeringaspirin,alvedon,etc.
