2­1 Properties of Operations
Commutative Property of Addition :
You can change the ORDER of the addends without changing the sum.
Ex. 6 + 4 = 4 + 6
a + b = b + a
1 +(­ 4) = (­ 4) +1
Commutative Property of Multiplication:
You can multiply factors in any ORDER without changing the product.
Ex. 8 x 4 = 4 x 8

Associative Property of Addition:
You can change the GROUPING of numbers without
changing the sum.
Ex. (3 + 7) + 2 = 3 + (7 + 2)
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
Associative Property of Multiplication:
You can change the GROUPING of numbers without changing the product.
Ex. (7 3) 2 = 7 (3 2)
(ab)c = a(bc)
* Grouping does not matter

Additive Identity:
When you add zero to any number the sum is always that number.
Ex. 12 + 0 = 12
a + 0 = a
Multiplicative Identity:
When you multiply by one the product is always that number.
Ex. 10 x 1= 10
1a = a
Zero Property of Multiplication: Any number times zero is zero.
Ex. 3 x 0 = 0
0x = 0
