BACKGROUND
Since of late IUCNSL office has been engaged in many biodiversity related projects both at the request of its partners and
outside agencies as a result of its own initiatives. The PO Bd is required to contribute in development, resourcing and
management of species conservation and biodiversity related projects within the country office, assisting the Programme
Coordinator in fundraising for biodiversity projects and linking them with those of IUCN regional and global programmes.
He/she is also expected to take an active role in establishing task teams for the purpose of conceiving and developing
biodiversity and species related projects for the country office.
JOB DESCRIPTION
IUCN in Sri Lanka is managing several projects with field biodiversity components. In order to cater to the demand for managing
parallel field teams and managing biodiversity related projects, capacity within IUCN needs strengthening. The Programme
Officer will support IUCN SL in managing parallel field biodiversity teams particularly in managing Yan Oya project and
maintaining a healthy portfolio of biodiversity projects in IUCN SL.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
I. Management of field biodiversity teams of ongoing projects of IUCN SL and coordinate and deliver technical reports according
to project deliverables
II. Project management of the Yan Oya irrigation project
III. Contribute as a fauna expert to biodiversity projects managed by the Senior Programme Officer Biodiversity.
IV. Contribute to Rapid Biodiversity Assessments of Kapirikgama cascade system at Rambewa
V. Assist Project Manager, MFF Regional Project on Gulf of Mannar in project implementation and any other marine work on
mutual agreement
VI. Contribute as a member of the team in implementation of Moragahakanada and Kalugaganga Project Phase II activities
VII. Any other biodiversity related works and active support to the project development work.
REQUIREMENTS
• The Programme Officer is expected to build IUCN Country Office capacity in species conservation including field
assessments, developing species conservation plans, ecosystem studies, species rescue and restoration activities while
supporting national, regional and international policy processes.
• The ideal candidate should possess:
1. A first degree in biological science, natural resource management or conservation sciences followed by a Masters’
degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, project management;
2. At least five years progressive experience of working in a reputable national or international conservation organization,
academic or research institute;
3. Strong grasp of species identification and biodiversity conservation issues and methodologies, with a particular emphasis
on vertebrates and selected invertebrate groups;

4. Sound knowledge on wetlands and wetland related fauna and flora of Sri Lanka;
5. Strong communication skills in English;
6. Project management skills with proven track record in managing field ecologists for conservation projects;
7. Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and part of a dynamic team
8. Good computer skills.
9. Sound knowledge on Red List criteria and applying same at national level would be advantages.
10. The vacancy is open for only Sri Lankan nationals residing in Sri Lanka.
