Earth - the planet on which we live.
Moon - the natural satellite of the Earth.
Penumbra - the area in which the shadow of an object (in this case, the Earth
on the moon) is partial.
Sun - the star in our Solar System.
Umbra - the area in which the shadow of an object (in this case, the Earth on
the moon) is total. When the entire moon is in the Earth's umbra, we experience
a total lunar eclipse. When part of the moon is in the Earth's umbra, we
experience a partial lunar eclipse.
1. Using the vocabulary and definitions label the parts of a lunar eclipse.
2. If the entire moon is in the Earth’s umbra what type of lunar eclipse would occur?
3. If only a part of the moon is in the Earth’s umbra we would experience what type
of lunar eclipse?
