AVERAGES KICKING AND PUNTING PART 3 WELCOME TO THE 2015! MILE HIGH MATH SEASON Special teams: Kicking and Punting, Part 3 Brandon McManus, #8 Kicker Britton Colquitt, #4 Punter COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS: Summarize and describe distributions. (CCSS: 6.SP.B.4-5) AVERAGES KICKING AND PUNTING PART 3 With any sport that deals with quantitative analysis, players, coaches, and fans alike are generally concerned with the average output. What is the opponents average rushing yards per game? How many yards did the quarterback average each game? How many points, on average, did the team score this season? With punting, we are also concerned with average, but we are concerned with a particular type of average: NET AVERAGE. CALCULATING AVERAGE To Calculate average (or mean) is to find the “central” value of a set of numbers. You do this by using the following formula: Sum of all the numbers ÷ The number of values or Sum of the punt lengths ÷ The number of punts PUNT NUMBER PUNT LENGTH (YARDS) 1 22 yds 2 45 yds 3 38 yds 4 17 yds 5 51 yds Sum of punt lengths: 22 + 45 + 38 + 17 + 51 = 173 Sum of the punt lengths ÷ The number of punts: 173 ÷ 5 = 34.6 yds COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS: Summarize and describe distributions. (CCSS: 6.SP.B.4-5) AVERAGES KICKING AND PUNTING PART 3 Directions: Calculate the average punt length below. Sum of the punt lengths ÷ The number of punts PUNT NUMBER PUNT LENGTH (YARDS) 1 21 yds _______ + _______ + _______ + _______ + _______ = 2 47 yds _______ yards 3 31 yds 4 12 yds 5 55 yds _______ yards ÷ 5 = _______ yards Calculating Net Punting Average Net Average is the total yards that a punt gains after the return is made. As a team, you want a high net punt average. That is, not only is your punter kicking the ball far and high, but your team is able to tackle the returner before he can make a long return. You calculate Net Punt Average by following the steps below: 1 Find the “Net Punt Length: Punt length - Return length = Net Punt Length 2 Find the average of the Net Punt Length PUNT NUMBER PUNT LENGTH (YDS) RETURN LENGTH (YDS) NET PUNT LENGTH 1 21 yds 0 yds 21 yds 2 47 yds 5 yds 42 yds 3 31 yds 10 yds 21 yds 4 12 yds 0 yds 12 yds 5 55 yds 21 yds 34 yds _____________________ yards ÷ 5 = ______________ yards COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS: Summarize and describe distributions.
