With any sport that deals with quantitative analysis, players, coaches,
and fans alike are generally concerned with the average output.
What is the opponents average rushing yards per game?
How many yards did the quarterback average each game?
How many points, on average, did the team score this season?
With punting, we are also concerned with average,
but we are concerned with a particular type of average:
NET AVERAGE.
CALCULATING AVERAGE
To Calculate average (or mean) is to find the “central” value of a set of numbers. You do this by using the following formula:
Sum of all the numbers ÷ The number of values
or
Sum of the punt lengths ÷ The number of punts

Calculating Net Punting Average
Net Average is the total yards that a punt gains after the return is made. As a team, you want a high net punt average.
That is, not only is your punter kicking the ball far and high, but your team is able to tackle the returner before he can make a
long return. You calculate Net Punt Average by following the steps below:
