Therapies to aid
natural labour
Alternative therapies are used to encourage your body to release
hormones and start labour naturally. They aim to promote normal
labour and birth and can reduce the need for intervention and medical
induction of labour.
Acupuncture to
prepare for labour:
Combined therapies:
If a natural birth is important to you, you may
wish to consider pre-birth Acupuncture,
a course of treatments performed once
a week from 37 weeks. Treatment can reduce
the time between your due date
and the birth. It can enable a more efficient
labour, and may also reduce labour time, rate of
medical induction and caesarean section,
as well as the rate of epidural use. If your baby
is overdue, acupuncture can provide
a gentle, natural inducement allowing you to
maintain control during labour and helping
you to achieve a natural, spontaneous birth.
Treatment begins at 40 weeks.
From your due date your therapist will work on
specific acupressure points that encourage
the release of hormones to promote labour.
This is in addition to reflexology which
stimulates specific points on the feet, followed
by a relaxing aromatherapy foot massage
with essential oils to promote tightening and
encourage relaxation. Prior to attending, it is
advisable to see your community midwife to
have a stretch and sweep performed as this
combination has shown to be beneficial.
These treatment sessions also give
you the opportunity for discussion with
experienced midwives.

Our therapies
Massage, received regularly during
pregnancy has proven to aid relaxation,
which encourages the natural onset of
labour, improving the chances of a normal
birth. It can also be used to target pregnancy
ailments such as hip pain or oedema.
Following childbirth, massage can aid
recovery physically and emotionally, assisting
the body’s natural healing response.
Aromatherapy can be used
alongside a personalised massage treatment
to relax, calm and uplift. Alternatively, it can
be used to treat a specific problem such as
post birth bruising or the ‘baby blues’. The
oils will be specifically blend for your needs.
Reflexology aims to restore
homeostasis – internal equilibrium – where
the body works in harmony to promote health.
Your therapist works on specific zones on the
soles of the feet to influence organs and to
treat disorders. After pregnancy, reflexology
can support recovery from birth, stimulate
lactation, reduce constipation, painful
perineum and third day blues.
Acupuncture is a safe and widely
accepted form of treatment during pregnancy.
In addition to relaxation and relief of common
pregnancy ailments, research shows that
Acupuncture can be very effective throughout
your pregnancy.
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese
therapy that has been successfully used in
western medicine. It is used to turn breech
babies into the head down position ideally
around 35 weeks; however babies have
turned near to full term. No needles are
involved; instead a warming herb is used
to stimulate acupuncture points on the little
toes. Women typically note an increase in
baby’s movements and report feeling relaxed
and calm.
