201 7 S e as o n ‘Casa Cassar’, Triq il-Vittorja, Valletta VLT 1050 [email protected] +356 2247 8100 Welcome Pjazza Teatru Rjal strives to attain cultural excellence by providing a diverse programme of the highest possible calibre topped up with the exceptional and unique experience of an open air performance space within Malta’s capital city. It is with great pride and pleasure that we welcome you to Pjazza Teatru Rjal’s artistic season 2017. This booklet will guide you through the main highlights and provide you with useful and practical information on every performance. Although all information in this booklet is correct at the time of printing, producers reserve the right to make certain changes. We therefore ask you to kindly check Pjazza Teatru Rjal’s website for the latest updates. In order to ensure that your experience at Pjazza Teatru Rjal is a most enjoyable one we invite you to read through the theatre’s house rules that are available for download on our website; purchasing of tickets or attendance at Pjazza Teatru Rjal implies the acceptance of these regulations. We thank you for your support and we look forward to welcoming you at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. Located right at the entrance of Valletta and next to Renzo Piano’s iconic Parliament building, Pjazza Teatru Rjal can boast of – arguably – the most enviable theatre location on the island. This has undoubtedly helped in no small manner to increase the popularity of this venue over the past four years since the former Royal Opera House got a new lease of life in the form of an open air theatre. The venue’s stage size and versatility as well as the technology with which the theatre is equipped have allowed it to accommodate orchestral performances (Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Malta Youth Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra), concerts (STOMP, Two Cellos, Tommy Emmanuel, Tuck & Patti, Ira Losco and Kelma Kelma Nota Nota), ballet performances (Ballet d’Europe, Ballet Boyz and Ûfin Malta), conferences (European Architecture Students Association), festivals (Valletta International Film Festival and L-G˙anja tal-Poplu), television shows, artistic installations and much more. Judging by the standards of this year’s artistic season I am confident that the concept of Pjazza Teatru Rjal is the start of a flourishing artistic era that will contribute substantially to the site’s illustrious history and to the local cultural scene. Allow me, therefore, to acknowledge the collective effort of all those involved in making this happen: the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government, Arts Council Malta, Pjazza Teatru Rjal Board, Management and Staff as well as producers and other cultural organisations who all work hand in hand with one common goal, that of attaining cultural excellence. To all these and to all Pjazza Teatru Rjal collaborators my heartfelt thanks. Charles Gatt Chairman True to its original meaning, Pjazza (It. piazza) Teatru Rjal is indeed proving to be an “open, public space” that is making arts accessible and available to everyone. Much like the concept of local town squares, Pjazza Teatru Rjal is fast becoming a melting pot of cultures, art forms and artistic expressions. The venue has increasingly gathered much interest from both local and international cultural operators thanks to its unique characteristics that are so much difficult to imitate or replicate elsewhere. The theatre’s strategic vision for 2017 intends to keep building upon these qualities whilst continuing to enhance Malta’s cultural calendar through top quality performances. The setting up of the Malta Concert Orchestra under the responsibility of Pjazza Teatru Rjal is another very important step in this direction. The orchestra is a versatile ensemble of professional and semi-professional musicians who will be performing in formations of various sizes depending on venue and occasion. Under the direction of Paul Abela and Joe Brown, I am certain that the Malta Concert Orchestra will successfully implement its mission, that of “reaching out to people across the board through accessible and inspiring musical performances.” On the doorstep of Valletta 18, one of Malta’s most important cultural milestones in recent history, Pjazza Teatru Rjal continues to grow from strength to strength thanks to the support of the numerous patrons who regularly attend our performances, to that of various producers who continue to believe in the potential of this venue and to all the staff who make everything possible. Mugenkyo forge a new musical path, developing the genre in new directions with both their own concert performance & their wide-ranging artistic collaborations, truly living up to their name “limitless reverberation”. Balzunetta Towers is a theatrical cabaret based on one of Malta’s best kept secrets – Balzunetta. Sometimes described as Strait Street’s naughtier sibling, Floriana’s lesser-known Balzunetta area earned its infamy through the ironic contrast between its risky goings-on and the official nature of its neighbourhood, which held the Maltese Curia, the Police Headquarters, and the Army Barracks. Set to play out in Pjazza Teatru Rjal with a live orchestra, this spectacular performance promises to deliver an exciting and interactive cabaret experience, replete with a spine-tingling collection of memoirs and tales that frame this enduring local myth within some of the islands’ most gripping historical eras.
