Course Descriptions
ASTU 381: Cambodian History
& Society (Munson)
This January travel course explores
Cambodian history, culture, and
society. We will explore the rich
civilization of this Southeast Asian
nation, from the famous ruins of
Angkor Wat temple to the ruinous era
of Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge, with a
special focus on the challenges facing
contemporary Cambodia. By the
conclusion of the course students
should be versant on the most salient
aspects of Cambodian history and
culture, in addition to being seasoned
travelers to that region of the world.
There are no prerequisites. CAR: NonWestern.
RELS 381: Religion in Cambodia
(Brown)
This travel course to Cambodia will
provide students a thorough
introduction to religion in Cambodia.
The primary objective of the course is to
explain religion in Cambodia as a
composite tradition composed of the
interaction of three dominant strands:
indigenous religion, Hinduism, and
Buddhism. To accomplish this objective and
prior to departure for Cambodia, students will
examine the key religious developments of
four historical periods: 1) The Formative
Period and the Indianization of Cambodian
Religion/Culture, 2) The Medieval Period and
the Ascendency of Theravada Buddhism, 3)
Cambodian Buddhism in the Modern Era:
Colonialism, Independence, and the Khmer
Rouge, 4) Contemporary Religious Practice in
Cambodia. Visits to religiously significant
sites in Cambodia will allow students to both
apply the knowledge they have gained and
appreciate the complex religious heritage they
are encountering. There are no prerequisites.
AOK: Religion; CAR: Non-Western.
