Starting July 8th 2015, the Clinical Microbiology laboratory will switch to a syndromic
gastrointestinal panel for diagnosis of gastroenteritis. Pathogens not covered by the
new assay will be detected in separate orderable tests.
Gastroenteritis PCR Panel
EPIC Code: GIPCR
Specimen type: Stool collected in Cary-Blair transport medium
The Gastroenteritis PCR Panel will detect following pathogens:
Bacteria: Salmonella enterica, Shigella spp., Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (including
O157 and non-O157 strains), Campylobacter species (C. jejuni, C. coli and C.
upsaliensis), Yersinia enterocolitica, Plesiomonas shigelloides, and Vibrio cholerae and
Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
Viruses: Adenovirus F40/41, Sapovirus, Norovirus GI/GII, Astrovirus, and Rotavirus A
Protozoa parasites:
Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica.
For GI pathogens not covered by the Gastroenteritis PCR Panel, the following
tests will be orderable:
Helminthic ova and larva
EPIC Code: LAB390 (synonym ROHELM)
Specimen type: Stool and others in sterile container or SAF
This test detects the presence of Helminthic eggs or larva in stool and other types of
samples.
Dientamoeba microscopic exam
EPIC Code: LAB388 (synonym RODEF)
Specimen type: Stool in sterile container or SAF
This test detects the presence of Dientamoeba fragilis in stool.
Isospora microscopic exam
EPIC Code: LAB389 (synonym ROISO)
Specimen type: Stool in sterile container or SAF
This test detects the presence of Isospora in stool.
Entamoeba histolytica exam
EPIC Code: ROEHIS
Specimen type: abscess fluid
This test detects the presence of Entamoeba histolytica in abscess fluid
Microsporidium
EPIC Code: ROMSP
Specimen type: Stool and others
This test detects the presence of Microsporidium
Viral Culture
EPIC Code: VCUL
Specimen type: Stool in sterile container or Swab in VTM
This test detects cultivatable Adenoviruses (non-40/41 serotypes) and Enteroviruses
from stool.
The following tests will no longer be orderable:
Ova and Parasites (O and P) (OAPE)
Giardia Antigen, Stool (Code: GIARS)
Giardia Screen with Reflex O&P (GIARR)
Cryptosporidium Antigen by Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) (CRYEIA)
Isospora Cyclospora (ROPK)
Rotavirus Antigen (DVERTV)
Norwalk-Like Virus (Norovirus), Stool (NORW)
