Chapter 11
Vocabulary
1. Chemical Equation- a representation of a chemical reaction showing the relative numbers of
reactant and product molecules
2. Skeleton Equation- a chemical equation in the simplest empirical form, without the coefficients
3. Catalysts- a substance that speeds up a reaction without being consumed
4. Coefficient- the number of a molecules of a compound (affects every element in the compound)
5. Balanced Equation- An equation where on both sides (the reactants and the products) have the
same number of each molecule
6. Combination (synthesis) reaction- a reaction whose products contain water and carbon dioxide
7. decomposition reaction- a reaction where one compound is broken up into different elements as
its products
8. Single Replacement Reaction- when two elements are combined into a compound added to a
single element and two elements switch places
9. Activity Series- an empirical tool used to predict products and reactivity of metals with water and
acids in replacement reactions
10. Double Replacement Reaction- when two compounds are combined and the products are two
new compounds with two sets of elements switched
11. Combustion Reaction-a vigorous and exothermic oxidation- reduction reaction that takes place
between certain substances (particularly organic compounds) and oxygen
12. Complete Ionic Equation- an equation that shows as ions all substances that are strong
electrolytes
13. Spectator Ion- an ion present in a solution that do not participate directly in a reaction
14. Net ionic Equation- an equation for a reaction in solution, representing strong electrolytes as ions
and showing only those components that are directly involved in chemical change
