Present Continuous
The present continuous tense is used to talk about things that are continuing to
happen.
The -ING form of a verb is called the present participle. You use the present
participle with am, is or are to make the present continuous tense (use am, is and
are as helping verbs or auxiliary verbs).
Look at these examples:

2. The basic use of Present Simple
We use the Present continuous or ( Present Progressive):
To describe something that is happening now.
Be quiet! I’m doing my homework.
To describe temporary states and actions.
She’s staying with her grandparents this week.
To describe states that are changing or developing.
Oil Prices are rising very fast these days.

To describe something that we plan to do in the immediate future.
We’re leaving for France tomorrow.
To describe actions that are repeated and annoying. In this case, we usually use
adverbs such as always, constantly etc.
You’re always borrowing my things without asking!
Time markers
Some time markers that we often use with the present continuous are: now, at
the moment, at present, today, these days, this month/week etc.
3. How to make –ING forms
We add –ing to most verbs, without changing the base form:
Wait for me
I am sitting down.
I am sleeping on the bed.
Two consonants don’t double.
Drink some water
I am using a broom.
Two vowel followed by a single consonant don’t double.
Sleep on the bed.
A single vowel followed by a single consonant doubles the final consonant:
Sit down
I am waiting for you.
If a verb ends in –e, omit the –e and add –ing:
Use a broom
I am drinking some water.
We double the last consonant of two-syllable verbs when the second syllable is
stressed:
Begin work
I am beginning work.
Compare the unstressed final syllable:
Visit my parents
I am visiting my parents.
-ic changes to –ick; -ie changes to –y;
Picnic on the river
My family is picnicking on the river
Lie down.
I am lying down.
