o Describe desired outcomes. Identify what students will know and be able to do. Specify key knowledge, skills and/or
understandings that will result from this lesson.
This activity will practice the following standards:
Number Sense:
1.2 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers (integers, fractions, and terminating
decimals) and take positive rational numbers to whole-number powers.
Algebra and Functions:
1.0 Students express quantitative relationships by using algebraic terminology, expressions,
equations, inequalities, and graphs:
1.4 Use algebraic terminology (e.g., variable, equation, term, coefficient, inequality, expression,
constant) correctly.
o Identify evidence of learning. Clarify how students will demonstrate their understanding, knowledge and/or skills.
Determine the product or assessment that will be evidence of student learning.
Completion of game.
Informal assessment while moving through the room.
Journal for debrief.
Homework completion.
o List materials needed. Determine what materials and resources you will need during the lesson.
Integer 4-in-a-row game boards (attached below)
Paper and pencils
o Open the lesson. Connect students’ prior knowledge, life experiences and interests with the learning goals of the lesson.
Motivate, pique interest and engage the learner.
Review positive and negative integers with students.
Explain they will be playing Integer 4-in-a-row to practice the rules.

o Provide instruction and modeling. Outline what you are going to teach and how. Sequence the instruction, and plan how
you will differentiate the content and/or instructional methods to meet the learning needs of the students.
Demonstrate how to play the game:
ß Pairs share a game board.
ß The first student selects two numbers from the list on the bottom and covers them with the
two chips.
ß The student can add, subtract, multiply, or divide the two numbers selected and mark off the
solution on the game board.
ß The second student moves one of the pieces on the bottom of the game board and covers a
new number. Then the student adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides those two numbers and
marks off the solution on the game board.
ß Turns rotate with each student moving one of the chips to cover a new number.
ß The first student to mark off four numbers in a row on the game board grid wins.
o Facilitate guided practice. Plan student practice and interaction with the subject matter. Differentiate the process, content
and/or product(s). Specify procedures, structures and time frames.
Play for about 20 minutes—

Pair students off.
Distribute game boards. (You can make additional game boards if you want variety.)
Distribute chips/markers so each student is distinguished as a player.
Demonstrate how the game is played before asking students to try it on their own.
o Close the lesson. Summarize, debrief the lesson and/or foreshadow next steps.
Before closing class, collect the materials and ask students to complete a journal on what they
learned or were reminded of during the activity.
o Plan independent practice or review. Create a follow-up that students could do as homework or that could be used as

on an overhead for students to define as a review the following day.
Assign homework that asks students to practice working with positive and negative integers.
