The Percentage Triangle
Equation 1 - The Percentage Triangle
The Percentage Triangle reveals all three variables. It shows when to multiply and when to
divide. When working inside the triangle, convert percent to decimal notation. For example,
80% is 0.8 inside the triangle. Recall that to convert a percent to decimal, divide the percent by
100 and drop the percentage sign. The other method is to shift the decimal 2 places to the left.
Fill in the numbers you have. The number you are looking for is given by the operation by the
other 2 numbers. There are two possible divisions, and one multiplication. Cover up what you
are looking for and the operation is revealed.
1. The part is the whole * percentage.
2. The whole is the part / percentage.
3. The percentage is the part / whole.
