Final Exam (50%)
Problem 1:
(10 Marks)
A) Two forces F1 & F2 act on the shown hook.
If F1=F2=F and their lines of action are at angle
θ apart, determine:
a) The magnitude of the resultant force FR, and
b) The angle between FR and F1.
⎛θ ⎞
Hint : cos ⎜ ⎟ =
⎝2⎠
1 + cos θ

B) For the shown equilibrium state,
if cable AB is subjected to a tension
of 700 N, determine the tension in
cables AC and AD and the
magnitude of the shown vertical
force, F.
Problem 2:
For the shown loaded truss:
i) Calculate the reactions at hinge E
and roller F
ii) Determine the zero force members
iii) Determine the force in members
DE, DF, CD, and GF, and state
whether each member is in
tension or compression
Problem 3:
Determine the horizontal and
vertical components of force at C
which member ABC exerts on
member CEF.
(10 Marks)
(7 Marks)
Problem 4:
Determine the normal force, shear
force, and moment at a section
passing through point D of the
two-member frame.
(8 Marks)
Problem 5:
a) Locate the centroid of the shaded area
bounded by the parabola and the line y = a
b) For the following cross-sectional area,
the centroid is at point C, d =2 m.
Calculate its moments of inertia about the
shown centroidal x and y axes (i.e. Ix' and
Iy' ).
Good Luck
