SNAILS
Giant African snail
Snail trails
REPTILES
Snail droppings present
Can be found under containers
You may only spot snail trails, eggs or
droppings.
The Giant African snail is a huge unwanted snail with a large
appetite. While the snail is between 2cm and 20cm in size, you
might only spot snail trails, egss or droppings.
Report (record contamination on log sheet and fax to MPI) any
evidence of snails in recently imported containers or imported
goods. If you find any snails or eggs, contain and call 0800 80 99 66
immediately.
Cane Toad
You may hear toads and frogs
FRUIT FLY
Snake
Can be found in containers
You may see lizards or hear toads and/or
frogs while unpacking a container.
Lizards are commonly found in containers from the Pacific Islands
and South East Asia. If your facility unpacks containers from
these areas, be on the look out for any live or dead reptiles such
as (lizards, snakes, toads and/or frogs). Cane toads make a load
“burring” sound similar to the sound of a dulled electric bell.
Reptiles can be poisonous and some are also capable of causing
temporary blindness, so do not attempt to handle them dead or
alive, but attempt to confine them and immediately call
800 80 99 66.
Mediterranean Fruit Fly
Can be seen around fruit
MOSQUITOES
Fruit Fly Larvae
Can be seen when unpacking
You may find un-manifested fruit or
vegetables and/or see insects or signs of
insect damage.
You must report un-manifested fruit (not listed on documents in
the container) and any signs of insects by contacting 0800 80 99
66. You must also record such instances on your log sheet and send
details to MPI.
Asian Tiger Mosquito
Standing water inside tyres
Standing water in buckets
– know what to look for.
Water in pipes or vehicles
– prevent contamination from
escaping (close container door, treat
with dual action insecticide and/
or dispose into a biosecurity waste
system).
You may see mosquitoes or wrigglers in
standing water.
Even a small amount of standing (still) water in something recently
arrived from overseas may contain mosquitoes eggs, larva (wrigglers)
or pupa.
Report any recently arrived receptables containing water or any
sightings of mosquitoes which may be associated with imported
goods immediately to 0800 80 99 66. Close the container and
spray the immediate and surrounding area with the dual action
insecticide.
– any container contamination
requiring immediate action to

completed log contamination sheet to:

Frass and exit holes
Insect damage on pallets
You may find frass and exit holes on
pallets and other wooden items.
Frass or borer dust is the excrement or waste product of wood boring
insects like beetles and termites. It resembles sawdust, and may
be found with imported wooden objects and packing materials. Any
such evidence must be reported to your Facility Operator or call
0800 80 99 66.
Can be found on flat racks
Can be found in containers
You may see soil, seeds or leaves on/in
imported goods and/or containers.
Soil, seeds and leaves may carry pests and diseases of an invasive
species. If you see any contamination such as seeds, soil or
leaves, these must be gathered and placed in a sealed container
and disposed of in the biosecurity bin. The contamination should
also be inspected to ensure it is pest free. If there are live insects
found, contain (i.e. close container door) and call 0800 80 99 66
immediately.
Egg masses on container
Asian Gypsy Larvae
You may see wandering caterpillars, or
a cluster of eggs in a sheltered area
Egg masses have been found on or in containers, vehicles and even
vessels. If you see a cluster or mass of insect eggs, spray the eggs
with dual action insecticide, remove and place in the biosecurity bin
and spray the area where the egg mass was removed from. Call
0800 80 99 66 immediately, as eggs can hatch at any time, and
advise your Facility Operator.
Dust piles and exit holes
Mounds and circles of dirt
You may see dust piles, mounds or
swarms of live ants.
Some species of ants are serious pests to human health as well as
threats to the environment. If you get bitten or see any live ants,
contain (close door) and immediately call 0800 80 99 66. If you
see dust piles with recently imported goods, or find any unusual
looking mounds, spray the mound with dual action insecticide and
immediately call 0800 80 99 66 and also send a contamination
report to MPI.
