Indices Refresher Sheet 1
What do Powers/Indices mean?:
π‘₯2
is said: β€˜ π‘₯ squared β€˜ and means π‘₯ × π‘₯
π‘₯3
is said: β€˜π‘₯ cubed’ and means π‘₯ × π‘₯ × π‘₯
π‘₯ 4 is said: β€˜π‘₯ to the power of 4’ and means π‘₯ × π‘₯ × π‘₯ × π‘₯
etc….
The superscript numbers (2, 3 & 4 above) are known as indices or powers. For all other
powers (apart from 2 & 3) you would say π‘₯ to the power of.
Examples:
32 = 3 × 3 = 9
53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125
34 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81
25 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32
(3 squared)
(5 cubed)
(3 to the power of 4)
(2 to the power of 5)
What do roots mean?:
Roots are the opposite of powers.
ο‚·
βˆšπŸ’ = 2 or -2 (because 2 x 2 and -2 x -2 = 4)
We know that 2 x 2 = 22 = 4, so reversing it gives: √4 = 2 (we say square root of 4)
Also notice: -2 x -2 = (-2)2 = 4 so also √4 = -2
ο‚·
πŸ‘
βˆšπŸπŸ• = 3 (because 3 x 3 x 3 = 27)
3
We know: 3 x 3 x 3 = 33 = 27, therefore √27 = 3 (we say cubed root of 27).
Also notice: -3 x -3 x -3 = (-3)3 = -27 so there is only 1 root for a cubed number.
ο‚·
πŸ’
βˆšπŸπŸ” = 2 or -2 (because 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16 and -2 x -2 x -2 x -2 = 16)
4
We know that 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 24 = 16, so reversing gives: √16 = 2 (we say 4th root of 16)
4
Also notice: -2 x -2 x -2 x -2 = (-2)4 = 16 so also √16 = -2
Remember:
√(π‘₯ 2 ) = π‘₯
2
(√π‘₯) = π‘₯
(The square root of π’™πŸ takes you back to π‘₯ as they cancel each other out)
(if you square √π‘₯ you’re back to π‘₯ as they cancel each other out)
2
(√16) = (4)2 = 16
√(32 ) = √9 = 3
The general formula is:
𝑛
√π‘₯ 𝑛 = π‘₯
