Weather Maps Created by: Stacey Osbrone Essential Questions How can I use a weather map to forecast tomorrow s weather? How can I read a weather map? What does a weather map show? Did you know… Weather maps and weather instruments are related. Weather maps show what the weather will be at a certain time and in the future. What do they show? § Temperature § Precipitation § Air Mass § Fronts § Air pressure Temperature, Precipitation and Air Mass Temperature- How hot or cold air is Precipitation- rain, snow, sleet, hail Air Mass- a large volume of air with the same temperature and humidity throughout. They can be cold and dry, cold and humid, warm and dry, and warm and humid. Fronts What is a front? A front is a place where different air masses meet. There are cold fronts which is a cold air mass that bumps against a warm air mass. This will cause thunderstorms and snow in colder weather. It will also cause the temperature to drop. Warm Front A warm front is when a warm air mass meets and slowly rides over a colder air mass. Sheets of grey clouds form at warm fronts. They also bring rain. Stationary Front This forms when either a cold or warm front stops moving. Clouds and precipitation form at stationary fronts. Below is the symbol to look for on a weather map. Air Pressure When you look at weather maps you will circle with with an H and an L inside them. The H stands for high pressure which usually brings fair weather.
