About Dr. Perih Dr. Perih began practicing in 1985. She successfully completed her certificate in Orthodontics from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She holds her doctorate in Dental Surgery and a master’s degree in Facial Growth from Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry, one of the two universities in North America that hosts the largest studies in facial growth and aging. Dr. Perih started her academic studies at the University of Scranton where, as an honor student, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology. Dr. Perih currently serves on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, where she previously served as Clinical Director of the Department of Orthodontics. She has also been a member of the faculty at Case Western Reserve University. Treatment of Children She has been the recipient of numerous academic awards and research grants, and has authored papers and abstracts for various publications. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontics and the Pennsylvania Dental Association. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that every child visit an orthodontist by age seven. By evaluating the mouth at a young age, Dr. Perih can help improve your child’s dental development and appearance. She can do this by guiding jaw growth, lowering the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, while also correcting harmful oral habits, improving speech, appearance, selfesteem and guiding permanent teeth into a more favorable position with less time in full braces. A native of Scranton, Dr. Perih is married to Dr. James Stefanelli and is the mother of five children. She is actively involved in the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and chairs a fund for the foundation in the name of her late daughter, Simone. She is also involved in a number of civic endeavors and sponsors patient involvement in the arts, culture and sports activities in the Scranton community. Dr. Perih is committed to helping foster interest in the health profession. She publicly speaks and hosts students and interns in her practice. Your First Visit Visiting Dr. Perih is the first step toward keeping your smile, teeth and gums as healthy and beautiful as possible. Before your first visit with us, you will be sent a comprehensive health questionnaire that includes medical, family, genetic and growth history. Any pertinent information will also be requested from your primary care dentist, with whom we will work closely. After reviewing this history, Dr. Perih will conduct a thorough examination to diagnose dental or facial irregularities. Dr. Perih will then explain these findings to you and recommend corrective treatment or preventive care. We also have the ability to digitally display our recommendations, to help you understand them more fully. These examinations are important because some irregularities may not be obvious. Whether you were born with dental or facial irregularities, or if you acquired them at some point in life, this initial examination will allow Dr. Perih to determine what corrective actions should be taken. (Ages 4-11) Adolescent Treatment (Ages 11-17) Facial structure changes quickly as children grow and reach puberty. Working with preteen and teenager jaw growth coincides with the changes in their overall body height and maturation. Orthopedic and orthodontic treatment is best performed before the full development of the permanent dentition and complete maturation of the patient. Problems are easier to correct in growing patients and can enhance the overall result as well as shorten adolescence treatment times. Adult Treatment While it is often best to start early, orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. In fact, a majority of adults require orthodontic treatment for a variety of facial and dental problems, and for cosmetic purposes. New technology that includes Invisalign®, clear braces and removable appliances make orthodontic options even more exciting and attractive for adults. Types of Appliances Since Dr. Perih is a fully trained and certified orthodontist, she is skilled in Invisalign®, clear non-staining braces, titanium and all latex free appliances. She will help select the appropriate appliances for you or your child.
