Collaborative Oat Research
March 7-8, Ottawa
Sponsored by the
North American Millers’ Association
The link between grain and goodness.
What makes oat varieties different ?
How can we use this information
to make better oats?
The CORE advantage
•
•
•
•
•
Engaged stakeholders
Public and collaborative researchers
Broad and deep knowledge diversity
Germplasm diversity
A modern toolbox
The CORE challenge
• Discovery  Transformational research
• Data  publications and solutions
• Recipe book for molecular breeding
• Shared kitchen ?
• Fair information and germplasm exchange
• Toward allele/haplotype sharing ?
• What would you do with your breeding if
– you could automate everything ?
– early generation ? multi-trait index ? ....
Meeting objectives
•
•
•
•
•
•
Understand what we have done
Understand what we can do with it
Ensure availability
Devise a plan
Share additional foundational research
Share experience with data analysis

Research Enterprise
Going forward:
Enterprise
or
Engagement ?
First principles (truths/assumptions)
 Traits are genetic (really!)
 Breeders improve based on genetics
 Breeders do better with diversity
 Molecular breeding CAN work
 Will require informatics
Will require teamwork, collaboration, and
TRUST
Warning: there is DNA in your breakfast !
12 billion (12x109) bases
• A single change at one of these bases
could increase fibre....
• But, an adapted oat variety requires
the right DNA at thousands of genes,
millions of bases.
Fun DNA facts
Typing 60 words per minute, eight
hours a day, it would take 50 years
to type ONE COPY of your genome
The DNA in all your cells would
reach the moon 6000 times.
The oat genome is 4 times longer
than the human genome.
Some DNA: genes  proteins
But, most DNA has no known function
?
This is what we were looking for
Allele

Functional
Single Nucleotide Polymorphism

= Marker

How we find a useful SNP

But we need many SNPs to find this
