Circuit Question & Solution
1. What is the power dissipated across 3 Ohm resistor?
Solution:
Calculate the current through and voltage across the 3 Ohm resistor
Total Current in circuit: Itotal = Vtotal/Rtotal (using Ohms law)
Rtotal = 4 + 6 || 3 = 4 + 2 = 6 Ohms
Therefore Itotal = 12V/6Ohms = 2 A
Voltage across to Parallel Equivalent Resistor (6 || 3) = 2A * 2Ohms = 4V
Therefore the voltage across 3 Ohm resistor = 4V
Power dissipated across the 3 Ohm = V2/R = (4 * 4)/3 = 5.33 Watts
